Good to see somebody else list Last Chance from Whenever We Wanted. There are several great songs on that underrated album, but that one's my favorite.

that's a decent song but the album its from is imo not s strong as what was before it or after it. its more of a transition album

Wonder how popular John is outside the states? His songs are as American as The Kinks are English. I love them for that reason but then Australia is practically the 51st state

I went to see him play in the Hunter a few years back and when he introduced I Need A Lover he stated that it was originally only a hit in Australia and without it there wouldn't have been a further album or music so..... I think we can safely say that Amarica only has JCM as a result of Australians!

Further more he was on Bowie's (well Tony DeFries's) Mainman label in the 70's which meant he got great coverage in the UK so I think it's safe to say he's big globally

The song and album have aged well, at least for me. I remember not being too keen on either one when i first bought the CD back in 90 i think. I found it too low key, from the somewhat mumbled vocals, to the spare arrangements etc...of course that's all part of the reason i like it so much today.

Ironically, a friend of mine saw him open for The Kinks in the early 80s

Although he's a big fan and admirer of Ray Davies, John's has occasionally spoken about how difficult it was touring with the Kinks, and how Ray and his brother were always fighting, even to the point of spitting at each other, yikes.

Crap. I forgot about Lonely Ol Night. Mellencamp was always very sympathetic to his female subjects.

Is Mellencamp the most underrated artists of the last 30 years? If so why?
