I could probably name dozens of 'em, but this one was an absolute gut-punch the first time I heard it (still is).

So many good covers at so many stages in his career, even the lean years of the 80s. Probably the top of my list would be If You Could Read My Mind from the final years with Rubin.

Sometimes, I think that this was how the song was supposed to sound. Has a darker feel.

The vintage years can't be beaten, but this cover is in my Top 5, better than "Hurt" IMO.

There are many. Today it's "Redemption Song" with Joe Strummer. It sounds so good when they sing together; I imagine them arm in arm.

Let's be frank... the bulk of Johnny's American Recordings covers are beyond necessary and essential and venturing into unparalleled territory.

Just to be clear, Johnny Cash has done TONS of covers since the beginning of his career in the mid-50's, not just at the end of his career with American Recordings. It's not like he was EVER a particularly prolific songwriter . . . not at all.

"Without Love" written by son-in-law Nick Lowe. He also covered Lowe's "The Beast In Me" but I prefer "Without Love".

There are so many to choose from! I can't say that my favorite one day will be the same the next, but this one is a worthy inclusion. I believe Cash is the definitive singer of this song, even if he inverted the chorus that Stan Jones originally wrote. Cash starts with "Yippie yi ooh," then "Yippie yi yay". The legend has it that Stan Jones' widow was a bit upset by the change and confided in Johnny Western. When Cash's version became a huge hit and the royalty checks started coming in, she spoke with Johnny Western again and told him she had no problem with the change.

My favorite version is live, because Earl Poole Ball really catches the spooky atmosphere, and the Carters even sound ghostly.

Satisfied Mind. There are other covers of that song I love though. It's a pretty popular number.

I've always dreamed about Johnny Cash doing 'I'm A Loser'. I can't explain why but i feel the song was made for him and i really wish he had done it in the 60's or 70's, i can almost hear him singing it.
