Joy Division/New Order Albums

Discussion in 'Music Corner' started by Havoc, Mar 20, 2018.

  1. Was always more of a Joy Divsion fan than New Order but glad that the rest continued. Joy Divsion can be harrowing to listen to as you grow older (at least for me).

Started listening to JD when I was 12 and it was harrowing then!

    NekoM Seriously not serious.

I get that. Unknown Pleasures doesn’t get to me too much if there’s a couple of kittens around.

    temptation vs temptation 1987
    -------------------------------------
    [IMG]

i like both versions, and do not favor one or the other
(or even the secret machines mix).

although i heard the original first, and have it heard it more
    often than the 87 version.
    ----

the original has a much longer intro, and outro, and more buildup
    across the 9 minutes.

    breakdown

    [-second verse-][---chorus---][third verse][--outro--]

    - original has longer intro
    - original vocals are much rougher
    - original vocals have some distortion on them
    - more layered vocals, and improvs on them
    - vocals sound like they are shouted
    - a lot more shouts and sounds from gillian, and others
    - vocals are more off-key
    - vocals are in different key
    - instruments are more basic and stripped down

    new order - temptation 1987
    ---------------------------
    Code:
    0m:0s-0m:24s 0m:25s-1m:14s 1m:15s-1m:46s 1m:47s-2m:02s 2m:03s-2m:24s 2m:25s-2m:54s 2m:55s-3m:43s

    [---inst---][----chorus----][--third verse--][--inst outro--]

    - song is 2 bpm slower than the original
    - song structure is different
    - new vocals are much cleaner
    - vocals are much clearer
    - vocals are on key, but different from original
    - vocals are more subdued
    - instruments are much cleaner, and clearer
    - drums are about the same
    - vocals are not shouted
    - vocals are not distorted
    - the oohs are much more subdued
    - this version is much shorter, with almost 2 minutes cut

you could overlay the new vocals over the original instruments.

or put the original vocals over the new instrumental.

One thing I found almost euphoric when seeing them in 1998 was the chant of "1-2-3-4!" from the pit [which was only on the bootleg tapes]

From the ashes of legendary band Joy Division, New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of all time.

After Ian Curtis tragically took his own life, Bernard Sumner (keyboardist and guitarist), Peter Hook (bassist) and Stephen Morris (drummer) re-formed the same year as New Order, with the addition of Gillian Gilbert (keyboardist and guitarist) and Sumner taking over as vocalist.

One of the questions mentions the gig at Stirling Uni in 1983. I was there. It was part of a 5 date tour of Scotland. I went to all 5 gigs.

Speaking of "Blue Monday", I re-listened to Substance recently and one thing I noticed is that "Blue Monday" and "The Beach" sound a lot thinner there (at least on the Qwest CD) than on the Qwest US CD edition of Power, Corruption & Lies. I'm guessing Qwest was given different sets of tapes for the two releases, but regardless it's an interesting oddity.

That said, it doesn't bother me too much. Despite its high quality as a compilation, I rarely play Substance because of its behemothic runtime (I'm the kind of person who doesn't skip tracks), and those two songs work a lot better as part of Power, Corruption & Lies, to the point where I'm genuinely surprised that the US cassette/CD configuration wasn't followed by London or Rhino.

Noticed this also. Since US Qwest already had the tapes for those two songs from the 12 inch I think they may have been used from that. US Substance is derived from the UK with some possible mastering tweaks.
Canada had their own also used for Blue Monday 1995. My favorite mastering for the original :)

I've not really listened to any of the new boxes. I did order the Ceremony 12" for the version I did not have a couple years back.

How's the eq on all these new ultra fancy sets i've been seeing vs the original factory or qwest pressings?

Very warm (same goes for the 12's) I do prefer this type of EQ but I think Frank may have went overboard as they sound as if they've lost that 'sparkle' I'm not sure if it's him or the source though.
The remaster compression (dB's) are what ruined all of them for me. I'd only recommended them for the extras and the art/design. :)
