Judith - one of the greatest voices anywhere, anytime. A wonderful interpreter of any lyric: she would find the heart and soul of the words and deliver them without a trace of artifice. And yes, a concert at The Myer Music Bowl in 1967 drew an audience estimated at 200,000. Those were the days.
Just two weeks ago, had found The Seekers were the oldest band where the original lineup were still alive and could in theory, reune. It was on a thread discussing Slade, who were proposed as.
Though it originated about as far away as possible i always consider this to be the archetypal mid sixties swinging London song.
Such a comforting voice, even though it always conveyed a touch of sadness. I will have to spin some Seekers vinyl Saturday. The Seekers singer Judith Durham dies aged 79 | Daily Mail Online
I feel like I've been gut punched. Being an Aussie, the Seekers were drowned into my soul at a very young age, and at a time when their success was behind them. The were huge here, and for many years, you could always find plenty of records in second hand stores as almost every thrift shop had them. Many early one's were pressed on the great and mighty 'W&G' label, heavy little deep grooved 45's and LP's for that matter, that could take a beating and still play great after being through a few parties! As good as they were on record, they were equally if more compelling to hear and watch on stage. I saw them once in a beautiful acoustic hall, and the sound was 'shimmering' and crystal clear. Their vocals and their playing, perfect! No bells and whistles, just superb harmonies and good clean instrumentation and great songs. Really sad, because it did seem like a matter of time before this day would come, but then, we've sort of been thinking that for the last 5 years or so I guess....... and she fought on this long. What a troubadour. There's a couple of great threads here on the Hoffman board I hope others can discover and really get to hear how great she and the original 'Seekers' were. Then there's that comment by John Lennon in which he apparently said, 'They're not a bad little band you know?'. RIP Judith, may we talk about you and keep reminding the world of how great you were. So many great songs, but I always thought this one you wrote was something special. 'Colours Of My Life'
Feeling like all the posters here having grown up on Seekers music :-( The carnival may be over but our memories of Judith live on. RIP
Absolutely loved her voice. One of the voices of my childhood. My ma and grandfather loved the Seekers so I heard so much or their material. It would very very hard to describe the emotional impact of The Carnival Is Over to today’s street savvy teens. It would probably sound so twee to them, yet it can still make me cry. That voice takes me instantly back to the mid-60s.
Ah, that's really sad news - her voice and the The Seekers songs were the sound of my childhood and we used to sing them in primary school. In fact, there was a Twitter month of Female Voices and I used The Carnival Is Over as my Day 10 track.
Wonderful voice...she had that kind of quality that seems to play no role anymore for nowadays singers. Singing from the bottom of your heart - not oversinging and just pretending great emotions... Georgy Girl still brings me to tears every time I hear it... Rest in peace....
Yes, and I was one of them! R.I.P. Judith, Strange, for no apparent reason I was humming “I’ll Never Find Another You” this afternoon, then I got home and saw the news.
