Anyone know what microphone Garland was using at her legendary performance at Carnegie Hall in 1961? Thanks.

I just picked up a copy of the DCC/our host mastered version as a Christmas present to myself!

Those look like two completely different microphones in posts #4 and #5. Are we certain the photos were taken at the Carnegie Hall gig?

No. These were taken in Amsterdam on December 10, 1960.

This could be Carnegie Hall. I am not sure. It also looks like a photo-montage.

Clearly a 666, which has a unique shape.

A question for the gearheads: have microphones improved much since the days of Neumman and EV? I've heard tales of some artists using the same actual microphone for years and years.

The 666 basically morphed into the RE-15 and it's sister, the RE-16, which is still available new today.

Neumann is still making great mics today, and the older models such as (most famously) the U47 still sell for very large sums on the professional used market.

Thanks for reopening this discussion, MLutthans.

I am currently interested in what kind of microphones might have been used to cover the orchestra for JUDY AT CARNEGIE HALL. I can find no surviving photos to help. Any clues? Thanks.

Our favourite all-purpose mic in the studio is the Coles 4038 which (if I’m not mistaken), hasn’t changed in 60 plus years. It just flatters almost everything we use it on. I’m no techie but it seems to me that while the technology has no doubt improved, certain designs are indeed timeless sonically. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong….

A follow-up, based on a new photo brought to our attention by @Radio:

@lukpac and anybody else -- any idea what the mic is to the left? KM56?

Also, I have Judy's album recorded at Manhattan Center, and it's no surprise to see the E-V 666 mic used there, as well:

That seems most likely, although it's hard to say for certain. Hopefully they'll post a higher resolution version eventually.
