I did not find her style of comedy funny, and her act did not work for me either, but despite all that I liked her. She projected a good person vibe. Rest easy Judy, and know you were good for a lot of people.
Yeah, she was definitely more of a performance artist in the style of Andy Kaufman than a true comic. Very few laughs during this performance:
Gasp! I don't really like standup comedy. In fact, I dislike it. But Ms. Tenuta was one of the four "comedians" I ever paid to see. The other three were: Emo Phillips [of course!], Sandra Bernhard, and Eddie Izzard. The Giver-Goddess anointed my scalp in performance, yet I am still going bald. [thinks] Maybe it's because she anointed my scalp! Thanks for the happiness, Judy. We'll miss you.
Did not know of her before the announcement of her death, but I did see high praise indeed from someone I do know of: https://twitter.com/alyankovic/status/1578171684380549120
I saw her in the late '80s at the Fillmore in San Francisco when they were filming a series of shows for HBO's Women of the Night. Got tickets for all the nights (for free) and went to most. I believe I saw her more than once during that run. Pretty funny. Good memories. RIP Judy.
RIP Judy Tenuta...The Goddess is gone, and very sad news to read today. I have some relatives that had known of her in early days and in fact her family members taught some great music classes in Chicago and Oak Park during those early years of her Comedic beginnings. She was very involved in her community and the L.A. community when she moved out West, thank you for all your creative and artistic gifts, Goddess - too soon gone!
Reading about Judy's passing last p.m. made feel incredibly sad. Judy was a unique artist and talent. One of a kind, really. Thanks Judy for all the laughs and for being you. RIP
Bummer...I went to see her when she was lowered from the Times Square "ball" as a promotion for Comedy Central. Jon Stewart was handing out ponchos which I believe I still have packed away somewhere...
This. I found her more of an irritant than anything else; I kind of assumed that was the point. Nevertheless, as dlokazip said upthread, EFF CANCER (Mrs. Majorlance became a 30-year survivor this week) and RIP "Love Goddess"
In fairness she hadn't really refined her act at that point. She was much funnier and more confident later on. RIP Judy.
