One thing about Darby O'Gill: Disney tied it in with their tv show. I was real little, but I remember a story which ended with Darby being taken away in a stagecoach driven by scary headless coachmen, and you had to go see the movie to find out what happened. At least that's how I remember it.

Walt was quite the salesman. He used that Disneyland TV show and its successors very effectively to market Disney productions and the theme park.

    Nope!

I only give clues after a couple of wrong guesses in a row. I will give you a bigger than average first clue to keep everyone happy, though: This director's most celebrated film is in French, his name sounds kind of French, but he is an American born in Connecticut.

See what happens when I give out the big clues right away! That's correct. It is Jules Dassin, director of Rififi, The Naked City, Brute Force, Night and the City, and Topkapi. He became an expatriate when blacklisted after being named as a Communist by director Edward Dmytryk during the McCarthy/HUAC meetings in 1952.

He was the father of Joe Dassin, who was a successful pop singer, particularly in France and Quebec.

Later in life, he was married to actress/politician/Greek icon/force of nature Melina Mercouri from 1966 until her death in 1994.

Thanks, Ben. Was a bit of a big clue, wasn't it? Indeed, just two words, 'French' and 'expatriate' probably would have been enough.
