Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

This one's been bothering me all afternoon....but I remember seeing a brief interview once....never a fave director of mine, his movies beat you over the head to make their points....even so, some striking B&W films.

    Maybe Stanley Kramer?

This is pathetic. I can't even check if you guys are right. I am way below your league. Just in case you are wrong, which you probably are not, I'll say Joseph Losey?

Bottom row: Billy Wilder, George Stevens, Luis Bunuel, Alfred Hitchcock, Rouben Mamoulian
Top Row: [Not Sure], William Wyler, George Cukor, Robert Wise, [Not Sure], [Not Sure]

    That picture is awesome.

Cukor's resemblance to C.B. DeMille is almost scary.....

I don't recognize any of the others you don't, Ken....the youngest guy there is the most baffling. Can't be Kubrick, but who else was that young when that photo was taken? Hmmmm.....

I just cheated and found the picture at a Bunuel website. The young-looking fellow is Jean-Claude Carrière, who wrote the screenplays for such films as "The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie" and "That Obscure Object of Desire" among others. The gathering was probably in honor of Bunuel judging by his central position (and seeming discomfort :)).

The gentleman on the upper left is Robert Mulligan. The gentleman on the upper right is producer Serge Silberman who was also a frequent Bunuel collaborater.

    I knew you'd like it.

    Here's the full caption:

"Directors Group, Nov. 1972. George Cukor Hosts a party for Luis Bunuel. Back Row from left: Robert Mulligan, William Wyler, George Cukor, Robert Wise, Jean-Claude Carriere, and Serge Silverman. Front Row from left: Billy Wilder, George Stevens, Luis Bunuel, Alfred Hitchcock, and Rouben Mamoulian."

    Mighty group Cukor put together!

It is not Bob Crane (and I don't think Bob Crane directed anything except for ... ah... home movies).

I've only seen Alan J. Pakula with a beard, but maybe that's him when he was younger.

Not Pakula. Time for a clue.

His directing career spanned some or all of the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Nope, but Preston Sturges did make an appearance in my Avatar when this thread was going on in the "Off Topic" Forum. :)

Clue #2: This director's only Academy Award nomination was in 1943.
