We have a winner! It is indeed Fred "Tex" Avery. His sole Oscar nomination was for the WW2 propaganda cartoon, "Blitz Wolf". Avery directed some of the "looniest" toons ever made, including Bad Luck Blackie, Magical Maestro, Red Hot Riding Hood, King-Size Canary, Symphony in Slang, Homesteader Droopy, The Cat That Hated People, and Swing Shift Cinderella for MGM; A Wild Hare, Porky's Duck Hunt, and I Love to Singa for WB; and Crazy Mixed-Up Pup for UIP/Walter Lantz.

Here's the picture from which I clipped the Avatar:

    Nice surprise.
You know I have that Compleat Tex Avery LaserDisc boxset and there's ONE picture of TEX "FROM THE BACK" while he is drawing with Fred Quimby looking over his shoulder. If there is one thing these contests have shown me is how few pictures exist of some famous directors.
    Congrats Phantom409

BTW, at the time, just like with "Best Picture" today, the producer of the cartoon was the one competing for the Oscar. "A Wild Hare" was also Oscar-nominated in 1941, but the nomination went to Leon Schlesinger, not Avery.

There was at least one documentary on Tex Avery that appeared on PBS - was it part of their "American Masters" series? I've also seen clips of Avery from home movies taken at the "Termite Terrace" and I think they may be in the BUGS BUNNY SUPERSTAR film. I wouldn't be surprised if the "Termite Terrace" footage winds up in the upcoming DVD set: LOONEY TUNES: THE GOLDEN COLLECTION, which look to be very, very good.

I've read that future collections of Looney Tunes depend on the sales of this first set, so buy soon and buy often!

    Adios, Tex

I went with a more artsy fartsy picture than usual this time. Any guesses as to the name of this movie director?

Jeez, that could be Sam Peckinpah...if Peckinpah had hair, which I will assume he did, once upon a time....took to wearing that bandana on his skull, though....

Not Hal Ashby. Not Sam Peckinpah.

Hint: His first feature film was released in 1968.

I want to put in my bet for Nic Roeg too. Performance...1968... first co-direction. I know ED posted first so the prize should go to him, but even if we both are wrong I actually came to guess on Roeg before I saw ED's. I did not want to mention this but ED does have two guesses going at once. John Carpenter and Nicholas Roeg.
    ;)

    Just kidding ED.

Good guess Ferric...but I checked his filmography and he had directed prior to 1968.

None of the above. Think of some seasonal favorites.

Ben got it! It is George Romero, the world's greatest "Director of the Living Dead". I figured if Rudy was gonna go seasonal with his Avatar, I may as well do so, too.

Ben is just monopolizing my entire "no-prize" collection lately (he figured out my math trick in the off-topic forum, too). I may have to re-order from the warehouse, so please allow 6-10 weeks for delivery.

FINALLY I get one. ED has a room full of these trophies. So I'd like to thank ED for letting me win this one. ;)
    Thanks Ken.

    Goodbye George

Okay, continuing in the artsier fartsier tradition of my George Romero avatar, here is a caricature of a filmmaking team. Can you ID them? Will the no-prize be yours this Christmas? Bring it on! ;)
