Yes, please, can we please continue arguing about the auto-coupling for another dozen pages or so?

  2. And we can still listen in the correct order. Either way we have to replace the record on our tables.

Does this comp flow logically from oldest tracks to newest, or does every side feature tracks from all eras? If the latter, then I don't see the big deal about the auto-coupling, but if the former, I would feel obligated to play the sides in proper order.

It's the latter and each side has a theme.

Each side is sort of thematic. They are NOT chronologic. So the songs (all from 1966 to 1971) jump around from random year to random year on each side.

Then in that case, I don't see it making any difference which side you play when. I think I'll stick with playing mine 1>4>2>3.

Uhh, Reprise’s manufacturing standard for double LPs was to autocouple during this time. It has nothing to do with intent.

When I listen to Tommy, I play it the same way, so it's like the movie Memento.

  15. So many double album comps were mixed sides like this in the 70s. Winwood, Clapton. I have a bunch.

Well, considering the LP was compiled by Reprise...

Seriously, I agree with you, but I have little doubt the sides were numbered in the intended order of play.

I have been listening to it steady since Saturday afternoon without one complaint from myself...

Can someone explain to me about the sides having themes. I never noticed that.

In John Mendelssohn's liner notes for the album, he writes:

"Side One of this album has many songs about places which Ray Davies has thought, 'This is where I belong'."

"The general theme of our second side is expressed in an Arthur song 'Yes Sir, No Sir': 'So you think that you've got ambition/ Stop your dreaming and your idle wishing/ You're outside and there ain't no admission/ To our play/ Pack up your ambition in an old kit bag/Soon you'll be happy with a packet of fags...' ."

"On Side Three we renew acquaintance with some of the more notable characters who reside in the Davies fancy."

"On Side Four The Kinks speak to and of women, of whom they've sung less frequently than nearly any other pop group with a comparable number of albums."

Guess it’s been years since I read the liners. Nice

I had a CTH pressing of Something Else that was pressed in 71 or so. It always sounded dull, lacked any shimmer and drums were thuddy. Decades later, I saw a tri-colour available and bought it. It sounded fantastic! I tell you this because some of the material was culled from the Something Else and VGPS sessions. My Kronikles is also CTH and has the same lack of shimmer. To find out this reissue may have that same dullness is disappointing as we've heard the pressings done well and not. How hard can it be?
I wrote the company and heard nothing. I've bought a copy - overpaid - and I'm waiting.

I sent an email to the company. They have yet to respond to my questions about the mastering.

No fake stereo. Don’t know about Mindless Child of Motherhood though. This had to be sourced from digital files.

It’s not dull sounding. Some tracks are a little shrill sounding but those are the mixes.
