Although Tae Guk Gi (The Brotherhood Of War) is by far the best Korean (anti-)war movie there are many more: The 15 Best Korean War Movies Also check out: 71: Into the Fire
New to BD Beasts Clawing at Straws (2020) - Korean heist/thriller starring the incredible Jeon Do-yeon (The Housemaid, Secrect Sunshine). Impressive directing & writing debut for Kim Yong-hoon. Highly recommended for fans of Korean movies with its non-linear story line, black humor and surprising violence.
Memories of Murder is finally getting the Criterion treatment: Memories of Murder Still my favourite Korean film by far. Don't collect Blu-ray's at the moment but I do plan to get a region free Blu-ray player at some point and go wild getting all the Criterion and Arrow releases I can get my hands on.
Not sure, this is the first I've heard about it. After reading a synopsis, it looks really interesting. I'll definitely catch it. I'll report back after I see it. Thanks for the lead!
After enjoying Korean Movies/TV series (mainly with subs), as an alternative to the **** from Hollywood, for a few weeks now, I have discovered some really great movies/series. Aside from the more known and great epics like "Kingdom" "Strangers from Hell" "Memories of Murder" and "Parasite", the movie "BURNING" from 2018 was absolutely awesome, slow burn but gripping and beautiful cinematography. From 2010 I watched "I SAW THE DEVIL" - most terrifying psycho/serial killer movie I saw in a looong time, maybe ever. OH MY GOD! TV series I really liked so far were "THE GOOD DETECTIVE" (great detective/murder mystery/political drama series) "SWEET HOME" (great horror/monster/apocalyptic mash-up) and "STRANGER" (convincing male prosecutor with flaw/female detective duo). Mostly these TV shows have 16 episodes and at 1 hour long, these hit the sweet spot for me. Next up will be "FLOWER OF EVIL" or "CRASH LANDING ON YOU" , I am not sure about the last one though ....... Still get ambushed by that strange thing about Koreans and knives in movies/TV, those are always shown blurred ......
THE WAILING is on my list, A TAXI DRIVER not ..... will have to check. Have you seen "BURNING" ? Thanks
From the same director of "I Saw the Devil": A Tale of Two Sisters, The Good The Bad The Weird. Check out all of Bong Joon-ho's movies.
After watching two episodes of "CRASH LANDING ON YOU" I have to say that this is a fantastic series. I hope it continues to hold that perfect balance of drama and comedy.
No, but one of the main characters in "CRASH" references that movie in the first episode .... is it a good movie ?
This has been mentioned already, but this movie is fantastic! Criterion Channel is playing it. Here is a short clip of Bong Joon-ho discussing the film.
I’ve only just found out about 5 mins ago - watched half the trailer as I didn’t want to see the whole film - why are they so bleeding long these days ?! . Looks right up my strasse. Will probably be one of the first films I go and see at the cinema when they open in a few days . Can’t wait !
Has anyone seen the Korean Netflix series Squid Game yet? It's all the rage in Korea right now according to my Korean friends. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk who also directed Silenced (The Crucible) which is a must-watch film based on an actual case of sexual assault at a school for the hearing impaired. As a fan of Silenced I definitely plan to check out Squid Game this weekend.
Family was watching it over Chuseok. I couldn't get into it. Tired concept (Hunger Games, Lord of the Flies, etc) and absolutely horrible acting. I really don't get its popularity. This is interesting though: Squid Game subtitles 'change meaning' of Netflix show
