Pulled out Harlem Nights the other day. Had a bunch of really good laughs. After watching, I looked to see when Pryor was diagnosed with MS, which was 1986, three years before the movie was released. Strange, after seeing that, I noticed things in his body language I didn't notice before......

Recently watched the awesome movies, how do the TV series compare?

I like them both and while there were body counts in each, the movies were fast and violent and the TV series seemed slower and had a quieter feel to them.

Western equivalent - The Wild Bunch or Tombstone?

Watched "Parallax View" last night alone.

Pretty good, wonder how accurate the Elliot Teichberg story is.

We picked up some horror/thriller titles we'd never seen, in a junk store for £1...The Hitcher, Ring, and the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All were OK, but wasn't too impressed.

    R. Lee Ermey was GREAT in The TCM though.

Sunday night I watched "Night and the City" (1950, d Jules Dassin). What a phenomenal noir it is. A small-time London hustler (but an American) tries to take over all of wrestling after ingratiating himself with one of the greats. But coming up with the money to back his show proves difficult. Any fans of noir film or film of that era who haven't seen it, don't wait!

Haven't seen that one yet, but I had my eye on Dassin's noir output since I saw the predecessor of that one - Pickup on South Street, also highly recommended.

Last night I watched John Sayles' Lone Star (1996), gotta be one of the best "lesser known" American movies of the '90s...

Glad to see John Sayles mentioned. I've been trying to snag a cheap DVD of his first movie, "Return of the Seacaucus 7." I remember it as being great. Wonder if it will hold up.

Last DVD: "A Fish Named Wanda."

Still entertaining; however, not as great as I remembered it. (Ain't that often the way?)

Ooops, I meant to say Thieves' Highway, but "Pickup", though not as good IMO, is also a fine noir.

  19. Yeah I agree. There are those who complain that it's a bit dated in terms of the technology evident in the film BUT since the original novel was written as if it was a novel written around "true" events, it doesn't bother me. I look at it the same way.

In fact, I think the fact that it IS of its time makes it a bit more powerful because it allows you to focus on the characters more and the treat.

The opening sequence is still ten times as chilling as the more graphic remake for TV.

Brilliantly made film by Robert Wise and I'd love to see this come to Blu plus include the promotional short featuring Michael Crichton that aired at the time which was cool as well.

I watched Heat on BD last night. What a miserable heist movie. The story is absurd and it took 2 hours and 46 minutes till the credits started...I stayed till the bitter end hoping that some plot twist would make it all seem worthwhile. That didn't happen. The cast was spectacularly good.... De Nero, Kilmer, Pacino, Sizemore, ect....but they couldn't save this barker....I'll never watch it again. :thumbsdn:

I watched this once when it first came out. It was "one and done." I never felt the "heat" either.

I really liked it too. I got the U.K. BD last summer. :agree:

"...I wanna be straight, I wanna be straight, I'm tired of taking drugs and staying up late....I wanna confirm, I wanna conform and find my place in the welfare state..."

"...I'm a crumb and I'm in your lemonade..."

"...They think I'm off my cross as I creep about the gaff...I've got all their names and addresses, later on I send them each a thank you letter..."

    I'm a Blockhead too...
