I watched Man Of Steel last night. I did'nt like how the origins of Superman were reconstituted. It seemed like they remade it as violently as they could.

You need to take Rex Reed's course on how to sugar-coat movies, like I did.... ;)

"12 Monkeys" - I enjoyed this movie much better this time than when I saw it years ago.

There was a local radio talk show host here in Philly named Jack McKinney (a true renaissance man, could talk politics, boxing, opera) who named this film as the worst he'd ever seen.I saw it at Steel Pier in Atlantic City,NJ and, indeed,it was a stinker.

This week I caught up on a couple of well-regarded recent movies:

    • The Place Beyond the Pines
    • The Way Way Back
The first was reasonably intense in places and certainly quite "cinematic," but its self-conscious style served mostly to put the characters through the writer-director's preordained paces. Only on a couple of occasions were the actors allowed to work with each other and generate some real warmth and vitality.

The second was much shaggier and looser and created an environment of good will from the outset. A really nice ensemble piece, a potentially trite coming-of-age movie that really shined all the way through, hitting the right notes and consistently catching me by surprise. An unexpected pleasure.

I thought the first 2/3 of The Place Beyond The Pines was great but it lost me in the final third.
