I got and watched the new edition of The Big White....it's very funny. I have a bunch of other new discs waiting,.... Eyes Of Laura Mars and Nixon on reg-lar BD. On UHD-BD I got Field Of Dreams, Black Hawk Down, and Hannibal. I'm not going fishing this week, I'll probably whittle down the list some....

Stanley Kramers "On the Beach" his adaption of Nevil Shute's 'end of the world is nearing' novel. It's a bit strange yet often works as either love story set against the imminent apocalypse or low key disaster movie wrapped around a love story. The entire Tony Perkins and wife story should have been dumped, and his acting quirks are very distracting. But the rest is so underplayed that its often compelling drama because of the desperation of those who know they are doomed and trying to go out with some dignity and humanity. The images of a deserted San Francisco seen from a submarine periscope are deeply haunting.

Currently watching the mini series Shogun on blu ray. Sometimes a transfer is TOO good. You can clearly see the skull cap makeup of the samurai.

Also any sequences where the old optical dissolve is used is extra grainy.

I got Von Richthofen And Brown. It's the most grainy BD I've seen in some while, maybe ever. I didn't like the story. It seemed incomplete. Either something was edited out or it was maybe never there....??? I did enjoy seeing the WW I aircraft fly.....

"Shoplifters". Kore-Edu is the new Ozu? Didn't know we needed a new Ozu, but anyone who can so sensitively and observantly explore family life and modern Japan (and the implied universality of the themes) is welcome. Excellent, possibly the best of last year imo.

Arrived yesterday: Blue Velvet, Criterion Collection BR, restored with David Lynch's direct involvement.

High on my watch list, but I have to be in the right mood for any Lynch film. Will report back by week's end.

How’s it look? I believe the Theatrical version is true 4K and the Directors version is an upsample.

Have not watched the theatrical yet but the director's cut look the best I have seen, using a Panny 820 to LG OLED 2018 65". However the audio was nothing to write home about.

Dvd dubbing is bad. What’s the Blu-Ray like?

Noticed Apocalypto actor Raoul Trujillo in it.
