I'm quite happy with the 6 disc DVD set. Battle Of The Century is looking better than I'd expected, U was trying to brace for a drop in quality to reel 2 and thought I must've missed it for a little while! I probably can't imagine how much work went into this. Interesting how that reel came through Robert Youngson who's Days Of Thrills And Laughter and When Comedy Was King did so much to spark my interest (from videos I played every few years starting in the '80s). Love the interviews with everyone too, they came out well, even with road and air traffic sounds!
Glad you enjoyed the set, too, beccabear67. I found the interviews charming, too, even with the traffic sounds. To hear from these people who actually worked with L & H was a treat. I'm glad Randy Skretvedt conducted the interviews on film and audio tape in 1981, and we get to see and hear them now in 2020. Marshall "Laurel & Hardy: The Definitive Restorations" Blu-ray Review
Oliver the 8th is the funniest L&H short by a mile. That's the one with Jitters the nutty butler. So funny.
It's a really nice collection and hope future releases will be conservative on restoration work and digital cleanup... especially if there's a project on older Silent Short films!
carrolls, I haven't seen Oliver the 8th in a long time. I'll have to check it out in the Essential Collection box set . Thanks for the comment. Marshall
Has anyone got the "Laurel or Hardy" Blu-Ray from Flicker Alley? https://www.amazon.com/Laurel-Hardy...1&keywords=laurel+hardy&qid=1617920601&sr=8-6
Sorry I missed your post and bumping this Thread back up. I have not yet picked that Blu-Ray collection released by Flicker Alley yet.
I've got the blu ray set. Yes its outstanding. It's laurel and hardy. The restoration is outstanding. I've also got the complete 21 disc dvd collection boxset.
I have heard murmurings lately that there are restorations of silent L&H films in the works, which would be released after the 95-year copyright finally expires on them (over the next couple years). It may be that the folks working on them don’t want to talk publicly about the effort until the copyright expiry. Advance publicity itself could be construed as a violation, I imagine.
Would be so nice to finally have L&H Silent get Restored as much as possible...miss seeing those up on tv occasionally, not as much as Chaplin and yet Stan and Oliver were side-splitting hilarious!
