'have not realised', not 'of not realised'.

As you say, there's always hope...

The BIT was a great place to score real old fashion acid and was certainly a significant factor in the local music scene.

1976 and the Rivington Festival, very hazy memories of Here & Now and I'm told Peter was there.

Then the 1976 Deeply Vale which foreshadowed the travelers festivals of the Rave period, Gong, Tractor, The Fall and acid, a places where those on the fringes congregated. These images convey the feel.

OMG @ 1.25,my girlfriend's walking away with food and I'm in the background scratching my eyebrow never seen that before:biglaugh:

I saw all of them, including Sham, but not the first time round. People forget there was a major punk revival in the 80s, when many bands reformed.

I loved Buzzcocks singles as they each arrived, and the third album, A Different Kind of Tension, is their album masterpiece in my book.

I saw them twice in the 80s/90s at Brixton Academy, once with Mike Joyce on drums and once with the returned John Maher. I had tickets to see them at the same venue in April 1994, but fate cruelly intervened.

Saw them promoting various albums after that, the sets a mixture of new material with heavy helpings of the old tunes. One day I was cruising the HMV store near Oxford Circus and they did a free in-store show, packed with the usual energy and quality.

Next saw them at the Academy in 2012 at one of the Back To Front shows - was that really six years ago next May??

Pete Shelley's first two post- Buzzcocks solo albums are also very good, while the third dropped a bit in quality. My best friend caught a 1981 or 1982 solo show performed with tapes in a small club in Oxford that he says was excellent.

I play his XL-1 album as often as the best Buzzcocks releases. This is a damn shame. I saw him play about 12 years ago and the band jumped around like kids.

Agree, although I have to say that I don't consider their post-reunion albums (the ones I've heard) to be a significant step down. I listen to A Different Kind of Tension, Trade Test Transmissions and Flat-Pack Philosophy without ever being tempted to skip a single song.

Thanks for posting this. Great article.

"Ever Fallen in Love" was covered in the Shrek 2 movie and soundtrack, so hopefully that helped him financially somewhat. RIP Pete.

Good, long interview + audience Q&A with Pete from earlier this year. Mark E. Smith's sister makes a surprise cameo at 1:03.00 to ask a question and she's as spirited as her brother was.

Some stunning lines in this. It's the sound of despair very well articulated:

'I've fallen from favour while trying to savour experience
I'm seeing things clearly but it has quite nearly blown my mind
It's the aim of existence to offer resistance to the flow of time'

    Also

'Where in the world are we? Everything's fake, nothing's real'

I think A Different Kind of Tension is an incredible album. Pete Shelley's songs are intense. Steve Diggle's Mad Mad Judy sounding out of place is the only flaw to me.

I agree but Steve's take on You Know You Can't Help It makes it all worth it.

A Different Kind of Tension and Singles Parts 1,2,3 are my fave Buzzcocks recordings. (I like all the other albums tho)
