I heard on the BBC Radio 4 news, and felt overcome by the urge to stick a speaker on the window sill and blast out Singles Going Steady.

    So I did just that.

His importance in the history of punk can not be overstated.

I'll go ahead and crank this up - LOUD - tonight in his honor.

Oh do please elaborate, I met him once or twice too at festivals I was shooting and I'd love to see if your memories of the man match up with mine.

Feel like I've been kicked in the gut right now, but at the same time I'm trying to be grateful for all the great songs he left us.

Buzzcocks records will still be being played decades hence! (After all, who has written songs as great as "Ever Fallen in Love?" or "What Do I Get?") RIP to a giant of the punk era, and a songwriter of humor, honesty and directness to rival *anybody*.

In the early 80's, his label was giving them ****, forcing them to disband (or starve) and I met him first in 1981 when he swore off guitar and went all synthy. Drove his manager crazy but I was over there at the time with my girlfriend from NYC who was really into the scene and knew everyone in the UK involved and we met close to Manchester in a little town where he and two others (forgot their names) were trying to get some publishing money that was owed. He was in a bad place and I tried to help him but going up against Virgin was brutal.

Met him a few more times and he was always nice with a hint of sadness, trying to get it together.

He really was very kind to me even though I was powerless to help him with his legal troubles. He autographed all three Buzzcocks albums for my girlfriend but I ended up with them. I'll photograph them one of these days.

What, I can't type ****? Sometimes this place even drives me crazy.

Singles Going Steady was a prized album in my collection. I bought it shortly after it came out in the US. I was in my last year of high school. It was popular at parties that year. I later bought Shelley’s Homosapiens and XL1 albums. The song “Homosapiens” is awesome to me still.

    RIP Pete Shelley.

He wrote one of the best unluckey-in-love songs in "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)", and another just as good for those even unluckier in love, "What Do I Get?". You know, so no one felt left out.

I'm doing exactly that right this minute.

He was a big part of my teenage soundtrack.

Like the Ramones, what they created is much more complex than it seems. Try to play Ever Fallen In Love? and make it sound as exciting as the Buzzcocks did. Great melodies, arrangements, all going 100 mph.

This is a tough one. Thank you Pete for all the pleasure you gave me.

More like the Kinks in terms of attack, melody, and lyrical sophistication.

Having only known him through his music, it's nice to hear that he was a nice guy in person, but it's also sad to learn it under these circumstances. Of course, we all like to think that our creative heroes are nice people in real life, but this isn't always the case, and it doesn't have to affect our enjoyment of their art. But onstage, Pete always seemed to lack any single shred of rockstar ego or pretension, and it's encouraging to hear that it wasn't an act.

I wish I hadn't just read this. Buzzcocks are one of my all time favorite bands of any genre. Pete's solo LPs are also great. Christ, the Lps they made after reforming are grossly overlooked.
Saw them a couple of summers ago in Asbury Park and had the true pleasure of hanging with them after the show. Pete and Steve were so nice and signed a bunch of my CDs, LPs, 7"s. I doubt there's much in the vaults but hope something previously unreleased will come.
    RIP, Pete.

And more like the Who in terms of teenage angst, confessional songwriting and power chord pummeling, but really, attempts to analogize them with any previous bands are doomed to failure. They were their own unique and beautiful thing.

Pete had a girlfriend in Brazil once and played some Buzzcocks sets at small bars with local musicians with no rehearsal just for fun. My friend who plays and teaches drums played with him.
