Lemon Twigs. First album on 4AD Went to a Seattle club this past Tuesday to see one of my favorite young bands called SunFlower Bean. Even better live than their album from this year. A great trio. The middle act was a young band from Long Island called the Lemon Twigs. Still teens I think and they were amazing. This new album, Do Hollywood just came out on 4AD Two brothers and several other members. Intricate power pop like the Raspberries, Klaatu, MGMT, Jellyfish with some Bay City Rollers thrown in. Even some Big Star. Some great schmaltzy pop. I was so impressed with them live I bought the album at the show. Great arrangements and amazing vocals. If you like that genre and some of those style bands you need to get this. Amazing.
They seem to be getting quite a push here in the UK to. On a side note I loved the Sunflower Bean album to.
How 'bout that? I discovered them just today. I heard 'em on Sirius XMU during Julian Casablancas' guest show. I think they're my new favorite band. Live at Amoeba Music:
Pretty tight live. Right ? Amazing vocals even with their sometimes schnsltzy Eric Carmen thing. These guys will go places.
Just happened to be checking these kids out and stumbled on this thread, what timing! Gonna bite on this one.
The only questionable thing about this album is the inner sleeve photo. I guess they are going for that 70s power pop look or it's them trying to be campy. But are they too young to be campy? Still a great record.
You are right. These guys look camper than a row of tents! Never to young(or old) to camp it up, Mazzy.
Great band! Heard These Words a couple of weeks ago and picked the record up on release date. The singles are the strongest tracks, but they're a promise for the future. Funny no one has mentioned Todd Rundgren in this thread. You don't need any other reference than him to summarize what they're doing.
They were on Jimmy Fallon a few weeks ago, questlove and Jimmy were super excited about them, talking about them early on in the show. Good stuff Watch The Questlove-Approved Lemon Twigs Play Fallon ยป
Caught them at the Analog in Portland two nights ago. The Brothers D'Addario are the real deal. A few years from now ... oh, boy. Also, the younger brother, Michael, is quite the hellion on stage. Haven't been this excited about an up-and-coming band in ages.
It's compressed and AM-radio sounding no matter what. Think Raspberries. The download I got with the vinyl sounds pretty much identical to the vinyl. I realize that's not a DR. Just saying don't expect hi-if.
thanks, let's hope it' s not too much compressed, my ears can't stand anymore all this new groups that sounds only good on radio.
Great album. Somehow reminds me of Sparks as well as Todd Rundgren. I agree that the sound on the vinyl is not that great
Pretty neat. It's like Jellyfish and Gilbert O' Sullivan did something naughty and this is what came out. There's also a hint of Kinks circa Preservation/Showbiz era as well. I like it.
Not so excited about the album tracks I've heard, but the Live at Ameoba session is a barnstormer. More than a little 70's Moon worship in the VERY capable drummer, and a real 10cc/Jellyfish thing going on otherwise. Great bass plater and keys too. Wow. Don't know if it has lasting power, but certainly the most interesting thing I've heard in a long time.
Just come across these chaps on 6music and they are brilliant! Just waiting for the new record shop in town to try and get a copy of the album. Amazingly talented. Can't wait to get hold of it.
Quite likely to be my favorite album of 2016. Inventive, smart, passionate and hugely fun. In re: the photos, Michael just seems like the kind of person who set the fabulous switch to 11 and then broke off the knob. We always need more of that kind of personality in pop.
