Thanks, I've found something similar, too. I've been struck down by a bug (curse of the Pharaohs, no doubt), but will have something up soon. I don't intend to include bootlegs, but some of the things they don't list in many of these discographies are commercially released items like the Ken Kesey Acid Test lp/cd and dvd, MGM Sunflower "Vintage Dead" & "Historic Dead", or the flexi-disc of Neal Cassady w/Dead Nov 1967 from Hank Harrison's first Dead book. The first few "chapters" will be a little tricky, but things like "Anthem" or "Europe" clusters should fall into place by themselves. There are SO many albums (and particularly pesky bonus discs I've missed) that I can't promise it'll be "just exactly perfect", but that's where the always helpful DeadHeads will come to the fore.

One of my favorite Dead songs is, New Speedway Boogie. They haven't really ever released live versions of this song. Anyone know why, or if there are some live versions around?

It appears they released exactly one version of "New Speedway Boogie" - from 1970 (exact date unknown). It appears on Fallout From The Phil Zone, which is highly recommended for many reasons.

edit - Jerry beat me to it! I didn't know it was from 5/1/70 - it was "unknown" at the time of release.

Thanks guys for the info. I checked out the you tube gig; very cool.
I will be looking up the Phil Zone disc, like now, man.
Maybe they will release some other live recordings of it in the future.
Dig the song, dig the lyrics, dig the groove.

Now that, I didn't know, and I'm old enough to know. For some strange reason, I always thought that it was about Speedway Meadow in G.G. Park, in some strange hallucenogenic way. Aside from being an existencialist protest song, I had always thought that it was the Dead just being the Dead, and tagging some Nietzche kinda title. Now, it goes a tad deeper for me, because it was written about a particular event in time. Now that's trippy. Go figure. Thanks for that info.

According to Robert Hunter's book of lyrics (A Box of Rain), "Mason's Children" was also a song "dealing obliquely with Altamont".

in 78 i went with my brother to interview hunter. we asked him about mason's children which had yet to be released officially in any form. he jumped up and got very excited saying he'd just about forgotten about the song. at that time he was doing a duet with larry klein. he called him in from the next room and said 'the mason! we gotta play that!' and he grabbed a guitar and started to show it to klein.

what a cool tune -- a fave of mine from the period. really weird, odd lyrics if you try to read it literally. of course most of Hunter's lyrics were out there at the time, but Mason's is deceptive to me because to doesn't sound so bizarre on casual listening.

very cool. with the brick and stoned references, I always wondered if Mason referred to the character's first name, the trade of Masonry, or the organization of Masons.

i am always surprised that this one was unreleased -- for me it's right up there with the best songs of theirs from 69.

I've got a cd called "Mason's Children" that's got a bunch of versions, including demos and alternate takes and live. I'll post more info when I get home and check it out.

if my memory serves, considering the period it must have been for relix. he was editor for them at the time but did some writing too.

I've got a CD called "Mason's Children" too. It has the absolutely KICK A$$ live version from 12/28/69 (my favorite), plus the studio version that later turned up on the SMR box, plus a bunch of their early studio recordings (ie: Early Morning Rain, Caution, Confusion Prince, etc....) that eventually came out on Birth of the Dead. It had a few other things too that haven't seen official release yet. I should dig it out.

    That's the one!

It's got a Mason's studio recording from 1969, and the live '69 Mason's as Mike describes. Also a Pig demo "I'm Coming Back Home", alternate versions of Uncle John's Band and Ripple and a rehearsal of Lovelight in the key of G. And a buncha Warlock demos and '66 sessions.
