I like Dear Father, annnnnnd I like the sound effects at the end.

    Nostalgia is a powerful drug.

    Ah, right.... PHCR-2054. :)

Well, I guess the fact that I got that close from memory without even double checking it shows what a collector mentality I have. :D

Yeah, I have no problem with the sound effects.

The song itself is a real smasher, IMO. Tony sounds like a man on a mission. The whole album is that way but on "Dear Father" he is playing with an intensity that is on a whole different level to my ears.

I think if someone came across the Original WB SBS for $5 they can't go wrong to start with it.
TE and NSD most cd versions are non existent or awful anyway so not much to choose from.
I do like the Original WB for these discs though and the WG Vertigos are good too.
I have been selling off a bunch of those 23pd cds most of them are crap.
A few such as the S/T which has the good sounding "Evil Woman"
MOR sounds good and maybe the same as the Original WB
SBS the title track has tape damage
Sabotage is brighter sounding than the original WB CD
A few others are basically the same as the Original WB CD's Paranoid, Vol4, TE and NSD
The PHCR for Born Again is nice too.
Can anyone comment on the PHCR for Live Evil is it the same as the Original WB?

Isn’t it a single disc, without War Pigs IIRC?

I consider it one of the best on the album, with a higher emotional quota than the album's average, and I find its placing in the running order quite appropriate. It works for me.

  13. Yep. These are the only complete digital versions of Live Evil that I am aware of:
    • Original WB CD (great sound, a tad compressed)
    • 1996 Japan TECW (terribly bright)
    • 2004 Russia Agat (listed on Discogs, I am not familiar with this release)
    • 2008 Rhino (too compressed)
    • 2010 Sanctuary (one channel sounds muffled)
    • 2010 Japan SHM-CD (I guess this probably contains the 2010 Sanctuary mastering)
    • 2013/2014 HDtracks (very nice and dynamic sound but a bit bright)
The original WB CD and the 2013/2014 HDtracks both sound excellent, and the 1xCD releases are all incomplete, so I consider the latter a waste of time.

I had that original WB set - took an age trying to find it too! Got rid of it for the ‘superior’ 08 Rhino Remaster .

Castle 1996 is the complete show minus Dio’s stage banter being almost nonexistent

    Don’t I know it well! ;).
I’m not a big fan of the album anyway so I don’t mind waiting before I track down that original WB (and probably pay at least three times what I initially paid about 15 years ago!)

    Black Sabbath Special

Went to the biggest newsagent in Cork today fully expecting them to stock this, I had seen previous special one-offs Record Collector mags for other acts before but nope, current issue only. Got the online order in straight away.

I just read this post and it reminded me to pick this up.

    Thanks very much.

There is a WH Smith next to the Sainsbury’s where I shop, hopefully they will have a copy in there.

Obviously my grocery shopping info is of huge interest to Black Sabbath fans :)

Linda, I can’t thank you enough! Born Again 1990 PHCR Japan is a sonic marvel compared to what I’m used to hearing. It almost (almost - it’ll never be an audiophile recording) sounds like a regular properly mastered album. Early days with it so far but every instrument sounds nice and balanced and nowhere near the harshness (or staticy-ness!)of the Castle 96. Loads of stuff going on in the background of some tracks I’ve never heard or didn’t pay attention to previously.

Love the booklet also / Krusher Joules’ fabulous hand written lyrics are present in all their glory and not reduced for space restrictions like the Castle.

A fantastic addition to my collection - Cheers for that

  24. I am very glad to hear that! I would never have thought of this CD as anything special without the advice of others who recommended it. All credit to them, @Tim1954, @Holy Diver and @kevin5brown.

What do you think about the Sabotage 2021 remaster so far? I don't have time to read through the entire thread so I apologize in case you've already addressed it.
