As a cardiac anesthesiologist I can only say that vocal cord injuries in these procedures are near the bottom of anyone’s concerns and exceedingly rare, like practically never.

Yes, if the patient were Lindsey Buckingham I would have an extra degree of paranoia, maybe use a smaller tube. Not necessary IMO but a gesture. This sounds like either a fluke or a fake. Either way, glad I wasn’t there.

I personally didn't think his vocal cords were in very good shape before the surgery.

There is a part of me that feels that in retrospect, Buckingham's dismissal might have been a blessing in disguise. At least he was of the road when it became apparent that he needed heart surgery. If he had been on tour with Fleetwood Mac, it's possible that the heart issue would have surfaced without warning and we might be talking about Lindsey Buckingham in the past tense.

Lindsey is the best. "Tusk" is one of my all time favorite albums.........ever. That album alone puts him at the top in my opinion.

I've said this elsewhere, but I wouldn't be shocked it either a) they sacked him for his own good and made up the narrative we hear currently, or b) he wasn't sacked but that was entirely fabricated so he could keep his health issue quiet (maybe a "small machine" tour would be less strenuous) and the Mac could still tour.

I realize that's small odds, and in all likliehood it went down the way we understand it. I agree with you 100% it was a blessing in disguise.

So they made up diva behaviour on Stevie Nick's behalf, and effectively cut Buckingham out of about $15M in touring income to "save Lindsey"?

I'd like to live in the world where that's even remotely possible. Of course, I'd be walking around wondering "Where are all the damn unicorns?"

I think the term “sacked” is not necessarily accurate. The door was left open for an eventual return by Lindsey, once the tour ended.

I’ll grant you that the prospects for that have diminished greatly, but for a time the possibility of a post-tour reunion was an option.

I’ve never heard that. And I don’t believe it. The new members were not hired as temporary replacements for a tour.

Hahaha well Stevie being a diva isn't necessarily made up! :)

Yep:) And they all have their moments, I'm sure. Lindsey is quite the taskmaster, and his critiques can be blunt.

After a few decades, I might not want anymore advice on my lyrics, either. So I can see the conversation going, "Chill out, or get out."

Honestly it sounds like everyone has told Lindsey to "back off" at one point or another.

One would think if you could survive Rumours, you could survive everything, but though time's passage heals but also reinforces the need to make the best of what's left!

Add to it the fact that (i think) the well has run dry for Stevie and what must have gone through her head when (if) she heard Lindsey and Chris' new material...

I wouldn't go that far (although I only saw them once, back in the 70's, probably the tour for Rumours), but here is a funny story for ya (I agree he is the best thing about the band, being very much into guitar meself).

The show that I saw I took a girl I knew from college, name of Cindy, it was our first date. We had decent seats (at the Philadelphia Spectrum), an arena, somewhere about 1/2 way back on the side in the first level. There was a couple next to us and the guy had binoculars that he let us use. I was blown away by Lindsey's guitar playing, especially the odd way he strums (IIRC he does not use a pick but instead anchors his thumb/hand under the strings and hits the strings from the top/side with his fingers).

While watching what he was doing through the binocs I exclaimed multiple times that "WOW !!! STEVIE IS AMAZING!! I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!!" or words to that effect. Duh and doh! I thought that "Stevie Nicks" was the name of the GUY on guitar, playing this amazing stuff in this way I had never seen b4. Cindy was none too pleased and gave me dirty looks which I did not understand till, I dunno, months or years later, when I learned who was who and realized "uh oh" she thought I was oggling the beautiful Ms. Nicks! It was our only date btw although I did ask her out again

If he's downsizing, hopefully its to a single floor residence to help with his recovery.

you are giving them way too much credit: you don't dump on somebody like they are doing if you are protecting them, that's not how that works. you don't cut them out of the band's history.

if he had a health issue they would say it, instead of continually dumping on him for over a year, stress of which is probably what exacerbated whatever underlying issue he may or may not have had - and we know he monitored it closely because of his family history.

they didn't do him any favors, they just added huge stress to his life which probably added up in causing heart attack. which would likely never happen if he was touring with the Mac.

i think you hit the nail on the head there! there's a reason why they keep emphasizing "happy happy happy now" narrative - because if you watch Making of Buckingham McVie, you can see how genuinely happy, fulfilled and relaxed the 4 members actually were when Stevie was not there to stir the pot and emphasize her importance.

Turns out this was Boston, and someone posted on twitter pics of a running into Lindsey at Whole Foods at the time. She said he couldn't talk but he was whispering and in good spirits. And we know he recently went back to Boston for a follow-up with a voice specialist (people are speculating it's the same voice specialist that did surgery on Adele's vocal cords and is famous for treating singers).

    LOL, good story! :D

I remember the first time I saw a copy of the S/T album in 1975 with the band on the back, I assumed the "guy" was Stevie (like Stevie Wonder, etc), and the "girl" was Lindsey. Made sense in my mind! The gender names are reversed from what you'd expect. I didn't figure it out until some years later, either!

I'm going to have to catch the documentary now to see!

It's very clear that the center of gravity had changed significantly. The universe revolves around Stevie and there is hardly any oxygen left for the others. Chris was always "off to the side" in some respects, but now entire articles are written without even a mention!

I like all of their songs, but if I had to choose/rank them, I would say Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie were better songwriters (and wrote better material) than Stevie Nicks.
