Don't know about this one, but during the late 90s Prince asked Michael Stipe if they owned their masters, and reportedly Stipe looked at Prince like he didn't know what he was talking about.

My guess would be yes, but I'm sure someone else here knows for sure.

REM owns their Warner Bros. catalog, and Universal owns the IRS catalog

Barnaby was originally distributed by CBS though back in the day.

Jimmy Buffett owns his Mailboat Records catalog as that is an independent label run by him, Barnaby owns his first 2 pre-fame albums and Universal still owns the rights to the famous stuff.

His more recent material is owned by him, the Shondells catalog and his big solo stuff (in other words, the Roulette catalog) is owned by Rhino/Warner Bros.

The P-in-a-circle actually means "produced." It was first used on British records (and possibly those in other European countries), replacing the verbiage "Record first produced 1965," for example. The P insignia crossed the pond in 1972 when recordings finally gained the same explicit copyright protection as printed works under U.S. copyright laws.

It means Phonographic copyright. For an exhausting discussion of it, see Sound recording copyright symbol - Wikipedia ยป.

At one point, Elvis Costello (at least up to the WB material). Not sure if that's still the case.

I believe Neil Diamond owns his, except for the Uni/MCA period.

Chicago's deal with Columbia gave them ownership of their masters once they recouped expenses, so they gained control of their records from that era in the 90's.

  16. Sometime in the early 90s Midnight Oil starting paying recording costs and delivering Sony finished albums. Then I believe they bought back their earlier work.

If that's the case great news. So the 2008 sub-par remasters were just under Sony Publishing and Distribution?

Now, Universal distributes Neil's Bang and Columbia recordings and they still own his Uni/MCA catalog.

    This is still the case.

I wonder if Tom Scholz owns Boston's masters of the albums he released after parting ways with Epic/CBS.

I wasn't clear if that changed with his Universal contract.

Universal owns the Boston MCA catalog so the answer is no.

  25. Belongs in the discussion of who destroyed his masters, in addition to owning them.

I love him. But Springsteen is also the George Lucas of music.
