I am so proud that I own the only one in red. I have some players that work just fine, do we just want a list of the "bad guys"?
Hello all, I'm new and this is my first post. Anyway, would de-emphasis be done by the DAC? If so, then the CD players using the Wolfson WM8741, and WM8742 DACs may provide de-emphasis if what they say corresponds to what you're discussing here. Here's what their blurb says: "The WM8742 includes fine resolution volume and soft mute control, digital de-emphasis and a range of advanced digital filter responses..." Other info can be found at www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/dacs. I have the Onkyo C-S5VL SACD/CD player, and it incorporates the WM8742 DAC. If this DAC does the kind of de-emphasizing you're discussing, then please add it to the list!

Agreed. I have little doubt that the vast majority of actual cd players handle pre-emphasis correctly. I'm pretty sure there are only two reasons to worry about this: 1) whenever someone has the timerity to say they prefer a cd version other than the "forum approved" earliest possible pressing, the first thing that is suggested by incredulous true believers is invariably that maybe their player is not decoding pre-emphasis properly. What other explanation could there be? 2) I think this may be a real issue for people into computer-based audio where there is a lot of variety in the software used. For instance, IIRC there is a known with some versions of EAC not setting the pre-emphasis flag correctly.

I believe Naim CDPs do have the de-emphasis capability as well as HDCD capability. Although I don't really pay attention to the "display" on my CD555 (it being so uninformative), once in a while I am surprised by a light indicating things like pre-emphasis or HDCD coding.
I've got the Naim CD-5i which does not decode HDCD, but I am fairly certain it decodes pre-emphasis correctly. Do we have a list of cds known to employ pre-emphasis? I'm sure I've got a few in the collection. . .

Thank you, good sir. And with that I am comfortable declaring as fact that the Naim CD-5i decodes pre-emphasis correctly
I too thought that being able to decode those type of cds was part of the standard. I assumed they did decode but simply didn't show an indicator.
Add Onkyo's C7030 to the list. I did a listening comparison between The Move's The Collection (Castle CD), and a CD clone I made with the PE flag removed. Huge difference.

Good question as this has been my understanding as well. Unless I missed it (probably did), this question has not been answered yet in the thread.
I would think it's safe to assume that every Sony brand CD, SACD, DVD, BR player in existence would properly decode pre-emphasis.
I am still curious about Marantz as well, I assume it does decode pre-emp since my pre-emp cds sound fine..... Iam not able to burn cds with the PE flag removed. Maybe someone can post a snippet of what to hear??
It might be worth the OP reporting his problem with the Cambridge 840C to Philips and/or Sony if this is the case. It has the Compact Disc logo right there on the disc tray, and it really shouldn't if it doesn't conform to the standard. Have you reported the problem to Cambridge? I have had dealings with their "support" in the past and was a long, long way from any sort of satisfaction.
