I agree There's also his Beethoven's Missa Solemnis... it's a good version imho, also if it's maybe less "strong" than Böhm's (my absolute personal reference), Karajan's and Giulini's (the latter strangely not so much appreciated in Italy... Nemo propheta in Patria... but it's a great rendition too).
Liszt's Sonata in Bm is something superhuman... whoever plays it (Pogo, Pollini, Wang, Argerich, Buniatishvili... etc etc etc)
MODEST MUSSORGSKIJ - Salammbô Ludmila Shemchuk as Salammbô ; Gheorghi Seleznev as Mathô ; William Stone as Balearic Islander, Spendius and Aminachar ; Giorgio Surjan as First Priest ; Giorgio Tieppo, Eftimios Michalopoulos as Pentarchs ; Piccolo coro maschile dell'Arena di Verona ; Coro di voci bianche dell'Oratorio dell'Immacolata di Bergamo ; Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro di Milano della Radiotelevisione Italiana ; Zoltán Peskó, conductor.
I only have a few of the Naxos "American Classics" (incl. this one) but they're all wonderful! Especially the George Walker, an excellent composer (imo)
Excellent first Chopin CD in this box. It is a shame Arrau did not record all of Chopin works as there are only 8 CD's and a complete Chopin box should be 10 - 14 CD's depending on grouping (I have the Complete Chopin Piano Works by Ashkenazy, Rubinstein, Magaloff and (Samson) Francois) ...
I have one Walker disc on Naxos. I have not listened to it in a while. I need to get it out. I guess I have around 20 of the American Classics discs.
Yes, I think I have the same one (unfortunately most of my collection is in storage at the moment, darn house renovation) but after that I found a few more. Actually I was thinking of his piano sonata 2, but turns out it's on Albany Records. This one...
I have that disc with the Second Piano Sonata. I always thought he was somewhat influenced by Prokofiev as well as the others he mentioned. He died a few months ago.
It is a great disc. Can't go wrong with the sound especially. To be honest, I think it is the only Nevsky I own but the Kije is as good as any other version IMO.
For the heck of it I checked Arkiv Music. They have 21 versions for sale and it is listed in the number one spot for his popular works.
That box set looks fantastic. I have quite a few singles with Arrau. I always liked his approach to the Waldstein sonata. He was a traditionalist at times but other times he really pushed the limits.
It sounds surprisingly good for DG. And the performance is great. I always think that Abbado should have gone to Chicago in the 1990s.
The versions of Nevsky I prefer are the Slatkin (vinyl or MFSL SACD) and the Reiner (RCA vinyl). Also, the film sound track version by Strobel is very fascinating.
