First listen to "Lamentatio Jeremaie prophetae" performed by the Egidius Kwartet and Gregoriana on Etcetera.
IIRC, I bought the following Elgar LP from King Karol in the early 70's for over $7, quite pricey for that time. While I still have that LP, it is pretty beat up after close to 50's, particularly when it was played on some cheap BSR turntable with crummy cartridge in those early days ...
Music of Richard Strauss on the turntable now: Don Juan; Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks; Der Rosenkavalier Suite. Eugen Jochum conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam. Philips re-release on "World Series" budget line; Not sure of release date, but prior to 1970 (when I got it).
On Spotify, disc 1 from "The Golden Age of the European Polyphony, 1350-1650" performed by the Laudantes Consort led by Guy Janssens on Cypres. CD 1: Machaut / Dunstable / Dufay
And it will probably stay that way - I just looked up the OOP set I posted and the asking price on Amazon is $465. Didn't see it anywhere else.
That’s nothing. My Haydn quartets exploration revealed the complete Tatrai recordings going for $765.98! I like that. Not $766. $765.98.
Now playing the following CD, a recent arrival for a first listen ... I now have all the Karajan Brahms Symphonies he recorded in the 1960's in my collection.
Are you sure that's the 1963 recording? Karajan recorded Brahms 4 for the fourth and last time in the late 1980s (I think it was 1988) and if I remember correctly your CD has that recording - but I could be mistaken, of course. I'm not sure Karajan's 1963 Brahms 4 was ever reissued on CD outside the Karajan 1960s box; I searched several times but never found it.
Just checked the liner notes: Recordings: Berlin, Jesus-Christus-Kirche, 10/1963 (op. 98), which is Symphony No. 4 in E minor op. 98
I miss it as well. I grew up buying cd's there in ny and we would make pilgrimages on metro north from where I lived just to hang out on broadway, Washington square and tower records. It's so alien today to imagine an American brick and mortar record store containing multiple escalators within it!
Finally the weekend (here at least!). Some music I enjoyed this week was concluding my hearing all of Schnabel playing the Beethoven piano sonatas as well as hearing his string quartet; IMHO way under recorded, it's an exceptionally composed piece I always thought it would be performed more if it were from a "bigger name" composer. Some of the Mozart piano concertos from the Szell box some JS Bach cantatas from the Hanssler box, Wasowski playing some of the Chopin Nocturnes (absolutely amazing performances), and some of the symphonies from the Melodiya Russian Anthology Vol 1 box and finally tonight Pogolerich playing Chopin's Piano Sonata 2.
Now playing the following CD, a recent arrival for a first listen ... @Rose River Bear, I just added another version of Elgar Enigma Variations to my collection.
Recorded 4/22-23/98 and 5/13, 17-18/99, St. Martin's Church, East Woodhay, Hampshire, UK. Producer & engineer: John Taylor.
