Yup. The new reference version imo. Makes fuddy-duddy comments not believing good Bach can come from Japan clearly ridiculous.
One of the top SMP's IMHO, I have had the following sets for a number of years but did not know there is a youtube until today ...
Thanks for the recommendation. I like the Abbado recordings on DG (at least for CD's, not so much for LP's) so I did a little hunting. Found: Claudio Abbado - The Symphony Edition. It contains the complete symphony output of several of my favorite composers including Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, and more. Amazon had the box for $97 so I pulled the trigger on it. I should be enjoying it on Monday evening!
@SteelyTom how was the concert? I tried my best to attend, there were still a few seats a couple of days before, but with my youngest having otitis media it would have been tough. This morning listened to Khachaturian Violin Concerto with Valeri Klimov and Shostakovich Symphony 15. Thinking about some better speakers for my lake house, Dutch and Dutch 8c are at the top of my list.
Enjoyed the concert. I'm guessing it wasn't her best night, as the Liszt pieces felt a little rushed. Contrary to my expectations going in, the Schubert turned out to be more memorable-- the soft playing and, yes, 'heavenly lengths' of her very slow reading of the first two movements. I think she's a very thoughtful artist who thinks in terms of narrative and shapes even Schubert's sonata form with a storyteller's approach. She has a wonderful future if she can avoid burnout. I had a chance to chat with her after the concert and observed her with others, and I was quite struck by her warmth and friendliness. We chatted a bit about the Schubert sonata, and suddenly all the glam melted away-- she was quite down-to-earth. So-- I guess that makes me a fan.
Oh-- and she did take the exposition repeat in D.960 (i). She was slower than Richter, which is saying something!
Very impressed by this new release; extremely inventive music, extremely well played and recorded - - Roman Palester (1907-1989): Chamber Works
Cool, was the performance similar to her CD? Besides Richter I believe Sokolov and Fiorentino also play the opening movement quite slow and some other live bootlegs I've heard from lesser known pianists. To me this is what feels right.
Have you enjoyed this box so far as you are really plowing ahead? Mine is still in its shrinkwrap. I may be able to flip it and make a quick profit though I only trade stocks, not big-box classical music and have in fact never sold any of my music ...
If you sell this box unopened, you might be able to afford a vacation home on Cape Cod. I do enjoy this box. All the performances I've heard so far are uniformly very good to great.
Now playing CD3 from the following box for a first listen. I also have the Beethoven 9th by Giulini with the BPO on a DG CD single ...
I completed my own Haydn string quartet compilation, as follows. I wanted to keep the cost under $5 per CD (including any shipping and taxes), which I managed to do. Played this earlier this morning. Kind of a weird duck maybe? I like the Schubert trio! Besides the Bach I had not heard any of these string trios before... Heifetz*, Primrose*, Piatigorsky* - Beethoven · Schubert — Trios · Bach — Sinfonias
I guess I am not a big-time symphonic guy but the Szell big box is mostly symphonies. My listening preference is much similar to that of @bluemooze than to most others - a lot of baroque, early music and choral. While I do have many symphony and piano recordings, I really do not listen to them as much as I should ...
