Yes, I get the criticism, too, as she sounded like she was at the end of a long tour and somewhat rushed through the second half of the program. Very few pianists would chose to take the first two movements of the Schubert sonata that slowly, but (as I told her) I was grateful for a different point of view on the work. Not recommendable as idiomatic Schubert, certainly, but if you're familiar with the piece, a worthwhile alternative. My mind keeps returning to the young Pogorelich as a 'comp', for better or worse.....
Having listened to Alina Ibragimova/Cédric Tiberghien's interpretation of César Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin a few times I am now returning to Isabelle Faust/ Alexander Melnikov's version:
Now playing: Debussy Études Momo Kodama, piano This is a fantastic recording sans the Hosokawa work, which isn’t my cup of tea. This particular performance of Debussy’s Études is remarkable. One of the best ones I’ve heard. I wouldn’t say she displaces my reference performance of this work, though, which would be Paul Jacobs on Nonesuch.
What a wonderful treasure you have come across! Gramophone Magazine is a great resource: gramophone.co.uk . I few issues of their print magazine will give you a good primer. Composers | gramophone.co.uk
On Spotify, "Vaughan Williams - Piano Concerto / Oboe Concerto / Serenade to Music / Flos Campi" performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Oundjian on Chandos.
I’m more interested in the music than the intricacies of the music and what made the composers tick. But if I wanted to get a handle on such matters I’d look for a college music textbook. Anyone here take a basic music course? I suspect an old edition might be cheap. Tons of stuff on Amazon for cheap.
Hello everyone, I bought P.D.Q. Bach "Music For An Awful Lot Of Winds And Percussion" from ImportCDs and received a CD-R. The printing on the label is a slight bit blurry and there was no security strip along the top of the jewel case. "MOD" was not specified in the item description as far as I could see. Is TELARC producing CD-Rs or might I have gotten a pirated edition? I find it hard to imagine that anyone would pirate this release. Thanks.
No doubt Isabelle Faust is a more mature violinist since Alina Ibragimova is still in her early 30's ...
I haven't listened to all of it yet, but I like it very much. Lazar Berman's DG set has always been my gold standard, and doing some brief A/B comparisons, I'd say she has superior recorded sound coupled with a more gentle/lyrical approach. Berman definitely out-guns her in the more overtly dramatic/virtuosic sections. They offer different but equally valid interpretations of the music. I'm happy to own both.
I will need to relisten to Berman, last time I did I thought he dragged in some places, which was very "un-Berman". Of course this could be me just misremembering. Now playing Pastoral sonata, one of the highest points from Sherman's Beethoven cycle. Slower tempi and his usual pianistic tricks work well.
