Christophorus, a German early music label and Hildegard von Bingen, a German early music composer, go together exceptionally well ...
Lately I've been enjoying a number of early music recordings on Christophorus and have come to have a great appreciation for soprano Sabine Lutzenberger. For my ears, her voice is ideally suited to this kind of music.
I bought the following Telemann Messias (Messiah in German), which happened to be dated 1759, the year George Frederic Handel died. It is another Christophorus recording ...
Spotify users- can you recommend some favorite recordings that you often play or labels/series that are streaming on the platform. Any I have this record I love it. What's HIP mean, period instruments?
Saw this at a classical shop today while buying food at the farmers market. Nikola Djoric is a serbian accordion player living in Vienna. This is his newest release, a beautiful rendition of "Pictures At An Exhibition", paired with children's music by Tchaikovsky. A marvellous listen, highly recommended.
First listen to CD 6 from "Claudio Abbado - The Complete RCA And Sony Album Collection" Beethoven - Symphony No 9 Berliner Philharmoniker Jane Eaglen - soprano Waltraud Meier - mezzo-soprano Ben Heppner - tenor Bryn Terfel - bass Swedish Radio Choir / Eric Ericson Chamber Choir
Historically Informed Performance - attempting to reproduce what a composition would have sounded like had you heard it when it was originally composed, using period instruments and what we know of period performance practices. You should be able to find most of what's been posted about in this thread on Spotify. Most, but not everything. Sometimes Amazon has CDs that aren't on Spotify. Some older recordings may not be available on streaming at all.
Afraid my opinion is worth much when it comes to comparing conductors. It sounded like pretty big-band-ish Beethoven.
First listen to CD 5 from "Neville Marriner - The Argo Years." Strauss - Metamorphosen Wagner - Siegfried Idyll Heinrich Baermann - Adagio for clarinet and strings Schoenberg - Verklarte Nacht
Recorded music is one of the greatest inventions of all time IMO. We cannot always be there to hear the live music real-time and recorded music just transcends time and space.
HIP = Historical Informed Performance? Does not sound so kosher grammatically with two adjacent adjectives ...
A little off topic here. I did not realize English was not the first language for Martin van Buren, the 8th US president. But he was American born or else he would not be eligible to hold that office. @J.A.W. Perhaps you already knew this ... Martin Van Buren - Wikipedia
A great box that I managed to get through once in record time ... This is much better than that later Capriccio box IMO.
As far as I know Abbado wasn't happy with his earlier Beethoven Symphonies recordings, with the exception of Symphony 9 from 1990 with the Berlin PO. The only cycle he seemed to be content with is the last one, which contains that recording of the 9th plus the 1991 live recordings of 1-8 with the BPO. The cycle is included in the Abbado Symphony Edition, and also in his Complete BPO Recordings box.
