I finally pulled the trigger on this set. The set I got seems to be a 1997 release made in Germany, however Discogs is only showing a 2007 release. This set was released twice I know, but was 1997 the original release? I think I read on amazon that the Germany made set was the one to get. Which do you have?
I think you're correct, but I'm just talking about the CD box set releases. I couldn't find a 1997 CD release on Discogs, but maybe they're just missing the listing. Edit: Either way I can't wait to dig in. Now I need some of his complete Lute work sets.
Adda is mentioned here as part of Accord, which is now owned by Universal Music France: Accord (French record label) - Wikipedia
The now defunct MDT was pretty good at promoting smaller record labels. Accord is a record label that does not get much promotion ...
@bluemooze, Just thought you may enjoy this youtube. I bought the CD below by this Czech ensemble ...
Great, thanks. I read some amazon reviews and one person seemed really upset at receiving the 2007 set, which I gather was the re-release and not made in Germany (according to his or her gripes). I'm still not able to tell if there's any difference between the sets quality-wise or if that person really just had their heart set on getting the 1997 set. Seems like I lucked out getting the first issue set for pretty cheap.
This person who was upset at getting the 2007 set probably also gave the set a one star review. I have gotten a bit uneasy counting on the Amazon reviews for my purchase decision, especially when the number of reviews are in the single digit. Get real, even Amazon cannot dictate which release it is to receive from UniversalMusic ...
On the turntable, record 1 from "Music Of The Gothic Era" by David Munrow and The Early Music Consort Of London on Archiv. Notre Dame period: Organa Leonin Perotin
On the turntable, record 1 from "French Baroque Lute Music" performed by Toyohiko Satoh on Das Alte Werk. Ennemond Gaultier Denis Gaultier Jacques Gallot Robert De Visee
On the turntable, "Hilary - 6 Partitas By Anton Garcia Abril" performed by Hilary Hahn on Decca. Turning the 20 Hz knob all the way to the left (turning down) on my Schiit Loki EQ solves the repetitive low-frequency problem I reported previously. Not much help to those who don't have tone controls. Still some random tics but not of the deal breaking type. Of course none of these manufacturing defects should be there in the first place.
The 12th was my first Shostakovich symphony. We analyzed it in school and our music teacher told us this was considered one of his lesser, more dull works. I can see why - given the context - but I love it nonetheless. Really intense, it inspires my imagination. And the recording is really good! I can only compare it to one of the DG recordings (I seem to recall it was conducted by Järvi) and that one seemed really shallow and distanced. Slovak does a far better job. Can anyone recommend another recording of this symphony?
