This is a very good Shostakovich cycle, my personal favorite of the several that I own. I'm going to bust out my copy of it and listen to Symphony No. 5, to start with, today.
hmmm, I might need to look into a copy of this one. I like the Karajan/VPO versions of these works more, and I own stereo layer SACDs of them (across two separate releases), but this one looks juicy.
I suspect this PentaTone recording was sourced from DG, as Kubelik was pretty much a DG artist during much of his recording career. @crispi, can you confirm?
I'm not @crispi, but I can confirm that. That version is also available here: it was part of an interesting symphony cycle in which Kubelik used a different orchestra for each symphony.
they also did another twofer with 4, 5 & 6. 1, 2 & 3 weren't released this way, but they can be found as pricey Japanese imports if one is so inclined.
IIRC from Kubelik DG big box, his Beethoven Symphonies were recorded with a number of different orchestras, not quite my preference though I have put up with the Furtwangler's Beethoven Symphonies cycle done the same way but that was a different era ...
Primephonic. The symphony was written in 2016. "The wintry, pastoral simplicity of the opening statement of the carol in the initial Allegro moderato evolves into something more imposing, even monumental pretty quickly. The emotional mood and gait of the music may well refract Matthews’ lifelong fascination with both Britten and Mahler and while this is unquestionably English music it’s so expertly made that it conveys universal appeal." Listening to "Insula Feminarum - Resonances Medievales De La Feminite Celte" performed by La Reverdie on Arcana.
I did a lot of soul-searching and came to the conclusion that out of the 400 or so recordings I have on Qobuz and Tidal playlists, I probably would actually want to own maybe 20-25, so I made a list of them and cancelled both streaming services (I far prefer physical media and FLAC/DSD hi-res files). I'm slowly replacing those titles and this is the first CD I received.
This new release from the lovely and talented Sharon Isbin on CD will be coming to the man cave on Friday.

I need to check out that set some time. It looks interesting. And one can never have enough recordings of the Brandenburgs.
