Listening to Shostakovich's symphony no. 10 performed by Rudolf Barshai and the WDR Sinfonieorchester from the Brilliant Complete Symphonies set. Great sounding set for a ridiculously low price.
CD cover is getting weirder and weirder everyday. Just received a promotion from Presto Classical on the following CD ... Is that an offer we cannot refuse?
First listen to CD 48 from "Deutsche Harmonia Mundi: 100 Great Recordings" Philippo Martino - Lute Trios The Age Of Passions - Lee Santana (lute), Karl Kaiser (flute), Petra Mullejans (violin), Hille Perl (viola da gamba)
Very likely, but I rarely follow along with a score unless it's a piece that I want to learn (for any composer).
I've read a lot of rave reviews of this SACD, so I ordered it and it arrived today. I must agree! He's a wonderful player, and the sound is among the best I have heard. The sense of presence and realism are remarkable. I wish he included another solo piano piece rather than the Webern 5 Pieces for Violin and piano ,perhaps his Piano Variations, but otherwise I'm very happy with it. Track Listing: Ludwig van Beethoven Sonate Nr. 32 c-moll Arnold Schönberg Sechs kleine Klavierstücke Anton Webern Vier Stücke für Geige und Klavier Alban Berg Sonate für Klavier
There's a rumour that a John Barbirolli box with his Pye and EMI recordings is planned by Warner. To be released next year: John Barbirolli - The Complete RCA and Columbia Album Collection
The title in question was mastered for the Decca Analogue Years box set by The Audio Archiving Company (Paschal Byrne, Ben Wiseman, and Craig Thompson) but there are no claims of original master tapes...
Yes, it is. I like the text around the disc: Worldwide distribution for Direct from Cleveland is exclusively by Discwasher, Inc., Columbia, Missouri, USA.
First listen to CD 17 from "Charles Munch - The Complete RCA Album Collection" on Sony. Chopin - Concerto No. 2 Boston Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Brailowsky Saint-Saens - Concerto No. 4 Boston Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Brailowsky
Both Bartok's Violin Concertos from this great Isabelle Faust disc and Russell Sherman playing Beethoven Op. 109; one of my favorites, rubato almost bordering on reckless in the opening movement but works incredibly well.
I only have a half dozen of Munch recordings on RCA Living Stereo SACD and perhaps a few other recordings on budget LP's I bought years ago ...
A 75-minute wallow in a vertiginous vortex of keyboard upheavals! The sound is good but would be a little fuller if the mics were closer. Altarus seems to favor a more distant perspective do many labels. Regardless, Powell is a phenomenal pianist and musician.
To conclude today's session, Hartman's String Quartets No.1 and 2. I can't say that I was as impressed as this reviewer: Hartmann Quartets CD ACCORD ACD 245-2 [JW] Classical Music Reviews: October 2019 - MusicWeb-International
Bought a nice spin bike for this lake house to stay in shape over the winter, mechanism is too noisy for speakers, so I'll take part in the tradition of this thread by ragging on millennials by saying I'm listening to music from my phone She is very good, but not really hearing anything I haven't heard from many other pianists or any new insights, sort of leaning towards skipping buying this.
I have the Vogler Quartett recording on Nimbus and I was impressed the last time I gave them a listen.
It is an exceptional box, Munch is really good with French music and there are many non-warhorse recordings on it, I am surprised it has stayed in print this long, those mega Sony boxes often come and go in the blink of an eye. It also has one of my favorite performances of Beethoven's 9th, you'll think your house was on fire by the time it is finished. And I am pretty sure the CD from the box sounds better than the older CD.
I meant the music didn’t impress me. Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood. It’s not too modern—I even like Elliott Carter’s quartets! It just didn’t speak to me.
Understood. Have you listened to any of Ernst Krenek's quartets? I think they are a few notches above Hartmann. Try the Sonare Quartett on YT.
