Not exactly easy listening. Some pieces are more compelling than others. Tiensuu's piece uses microtones (achieved by detuning some of the strings--he just sounds out of tune to me!) and some electronic effects in some movements. Highly virtuosic playing and excellent sound.
Just like me. I OTOH studied history of art. I also photograph - not professionally though. Cheers! Yes, exactly but I personally find these drying leathers a bit repulsive (although I'm not a vegan ), don't you? For me this is probably one of the most surprising covers I've ever seen (BTW by a good photographer too).
On the turntable: Ravel Daphnis et Chloé... the classic 1959 Monteux recording. I don't have the original Decca (or London) pressing; just this budget-priced London STS record I picked up in the '70s. Regardless, it's a beauty. Such a natural sound with ample "air" around the instruments and everything is so wonderfully balanced. The performance is spot-on... seminal, I'd say, since Monteux directed this work at its premiere in 1912 (!) after consultation with, and in the presence of, Ravel himself.
I preordered and it just arrived. Recorded live at First Congregational Church last year in Berkeley. I can't believe the handwritten note - I attend on the cheap and do not subscribe.
Listening to music of Spanish composer Manuel De Falla this evening: Suite from "The Three-Cornered Hat" and Nights in the Gardens of Spain. A '70s Crossroads LP reissue of early '60s Supraphon recordings.
It might be for the following concert but I do not do FB. I received an email last week for the following but was too lazy to put it through the translator though I could understand some of the texts: the SMP with conductor Jos van Veldhoven, a conductor I am quite familiar with since I already have all his Bach choral works recordings ... Mortensen was a student of Trevor Pinnock and made a number of recordings with Pinnock on DG Archiv. Probably the best harpsichordist from Scandinavia and is the conductor of Concerto Copenhagen. Love Copenhagen and visited that city twice in the early 90's when that part of the world was a much better place ...
