Playing this disc of Szymanowski's Music for Violin and Piano. Before this the Mazurkas exceptionally played by Sinae Lee. I will have to check out Marc-Andre Hamelin's disc at some point.
On the turntable: Xaver Scharwenka, Richard Kapp, Michael Ponti – Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 56 Candide – CE 31046
Yes indeed that is a terrific CD from Gekic, probably one of the best for the Transcendental Etudes. I was just reminded of that Frescobaldi CD when seeing just how close Gekic looks like Liszt on that particular album art
On the turntable: I've never heard 'The Curlew', before this. Rather lovely--and I usually don't care for the male voice in art songs. Peter Warlock / Vaughan Williams / Ian Partridge / David Butt / Janet Craxton / Music Group Of London – The Curlew / Four Hymns / Merciless Beauty. Another $1 find at the used record store, as was the Scharwenka, above. Odeon – HQS 1325 This is another of those EMI releases with the Nipper logo obscured with gold foil 'Odeon' stickers for the US market.
On the turntable: Barbara Hendricks, Katia Et Marielle Labèque – Barbara Hendricks Sings Gershwin Philips – 9500 987
I haven't listened to this in a while, so I did. Wow. Not only is his playing amazing, he recorded everything on one day! There is no applause and I don't hear any audience sounds, so I guess he was so well prepared that he walked into the hall and fired them off!
On the turntable: Bengt Hambraeus / Lars-Erik Larsson - Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester, Stig Westerberg – Rencontres Pour Orchestre / Due Auguri Caprice Records – CAP 1032
First listen to CD 11 from "Samson Francois - Complete Recordings" on Erato. Schumann - Etudes Symphonique / Papillons / Carnaval 1955-1956
On the turntable: Bartok – Bela & Ditta Pasztory Bartok, Harry J. Baker & Edward J. Rubsan – Bartok Plays Bartok Turnabout – TV 4159
The EMI 3-LP box below is my first version of Casals Bach Cello Suites, purchased in the early 80's ...
My CD sounds remarkable good considering the age of the recordings. If they applied noise reduction, they did it very subtle. Still hard to beat Casals on these pieces.
Now playing: Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka - Orchestral Works - Tchaikovsky Moscow Radio SO, Vladimir Fedosseiev
