Was reading an article about Stravinsky it mentioned The Rake's Progress. I remember enjoying it years ago. Thought let's have a listen but after searching, I don't seem to have a filing system, I was surprised to find I have no recordings that I have found anyway. Any suggestions would be welcome.
This is one of my favorite recordings of the GV. He adds lots of tasteful ornaments and plays so expressively. Excellent sound, too.
This is a really really nice disc. Can anyone help though. The main theme of the third movement (Adagio) of the Suk Serenade sounds really familiar but I can't for the life of me remember why ! Was it 'stolen' from another composer, or stolen by another composer ? Was it used for a popular song ? Or maybe in a movie ? Help from the forumites would be appreciated !!
Now playing CD10 from the following twofer from the following box for a first listen ... BTW, There is no Symphonie Fantastique by Rene Leibowitz in this twofer even though the original jacket says so.
Now playing CD11 from the following twofer - remaining portion of Romeo and Juliet from the following box for a first listen ...
Listening to a CD called "Fortune My Foe" of harpsichord music by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, recorded in 2o1o by Alina Rotaru, who is Romanian and looks appropriately goth on the cover to be playing the harpsichord at some vampire ball in an old and drafty castle. Sweelincks compositions would definitely suit the occasion. I have to remember this CD when somebody asks for spooky classical music. Really beautiful pieces, playing and sound though.
I bought this CD a few years ago when I was building up my Sweelinck collection. IMO, the best work is in the following box - The Complete Psalms, which I bought a few years ago but has been OOP for a while ...
I'm now listening to this--so far, so good. Modern but tonal. Iannarelli has written a number of good guitar pieces, so I was curious to hear this concerto by him. It's a major work at 41 minutes, and guitarist Alex Garrobe deals with its extensive demands very well. FLAC 16/44 but Qobuz has it, too.
Now playing - Frederick Delius - In A Summer Garden - Hallé Orch., LPO, Vernon Handley - recorded 1977 & 1981
On the turntable: Schumann - Walter Klien – Kreisleriana / Second Sonata For Piano Turnabout – TV 34317
Now playing: Béla Bartók - Concerto for Orchestra; Witold Lutosławski - Concerto for Orchestra - Royal Stockholm PO, Andrew Davis - recorded 1996
I have the following version. It is impossible to keep up with the nonstop slicing and dicing of these recordings ...
First listen to CD 2 from "Xuefei Yang - Sketches of China" performed with the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Renchang Fu on Decca.
I love Bartók, but listening to these two Concertos side by side, It's Lutosławski's that is much the better piece to my ears. Mind you, I'm talking about "excellent" and "outstanding" here....
