First listen to CD 20 from "Igor Stravinsky - The Complete Columbia Album Collection" on Sony Agon / Canticum Sacrum 1957 Stereo
It appears Previn appreciated Korngold as well (2 CD set) - there is a nice note from him praising Korngold's music in the booklet:
On the turntable: Still going through the records from the thrift store yesterday.... Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy – Incidental Music To "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Angel Records – S 35881
So glad I managed to grab this set digitally for $13 before it jumped back up in price! Starting with Disc 2 and Martha Argerich's wonderful rendition of Chopin's Préludes. Chopin: 24 Préludes, Op. 28 Chopin: Prélude in C sharp minor, Op. 45 Chopin: Prélude in A flat major, B. 86 Chopin: Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 35 Martha Argerich (piano)
Now playing: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - Magnificat; Motet "Heilig ist Gott"; Sinfonie D-Dur Wq 183 - RIAS Kammerchor, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Hans-Christoph Rademann - recorded 2013, 2011
Nice disc, I picked it up from a thrift a few months back. I like the way it is programmed along with the performances.
Now playing: Béla Bartók - Bluebeard's Castle - Anne Sofie von Otter, John Tomlinson, BPO, Bernard Haitink - recorded 1996
Listening to the Brandenburg Concertos, a magnet of Baroque music for me. A quality new release from Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, a beautiful rendition with Antoine Tamestit playing viola. The Qobuz editor praises its "sense of joyous intimacy and exitment radiating from absolutely everyone, combined with the sheer effortless(ness) of the virtuosity you're hearing at every fresh turn". https://www.harmoniamundi.com/#!/albums/2720
Gustav Holst born 21 September 1874. Played The Planets conducted by Boult (1978) earlier, now on A Dirge For Two Veterans from this set:
On the turntable: Still going through the discs I picked up yesterday at the thrift store for $1 each. Went back today to finish going through the racks and I bought another 16 discs, I'm afraid.... One wonders where all this good stuff comes from. I guess I'm very lucky. Here in Santa Rosa, we have at least five thrift stores that have records and I'm within an hour's drive of another five or six. Sometimes you find nothing or only one or two discs, but usually there's so much that you can be selective and still find great music..... I'll be posting new acquisitions for the rest of the week, probably. Tchaikovsky / Chicago Symphony Orchestra, James Levine – Symphony No. 6 ("Pathétique") RCA Red Seal – ARC1-5355
I generally don't mind a mix of composers, and often the original album experience comes that way. Having said that I also like having single composer options when I'm in the mood for that particular style.
MS 6279, issued 1961. Recorded 2/17/61, Town Hall, Philadelphia. Producer: Thomas Frost. Sessions had been moved from the Broadwood Hotel to the Hall, built as the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in 1927 and demolished in 1983. Ormandy & the Orchestra had previously recorded part of the work 12/21/52 in the Academy of Music, where their concerts were normally held. (Issued in 1953 on ML 4729.) At some point Columbia decided that a better recording venue must be found, first the Hotel & then the Hall. 70s pressing.

I'm a newbie. This set issued by Readers Digest (7CD's / 104 page hardbound book) is full of information and great music.
