Listening to "Cipriano de Rore - Missa Praeter Rerum Seriem" performed by the Huelgas Ensemble led by Paul Van Nevel on Harmonia Mundi.

After talking about this in another thread dedicated to classical SACDs, I decided to listen to this disc this morning: Brahms: Symphony No.4 Vienna Philharmonic & Carlos Kleiber Esoteric SACD (DG) To rehash my observations in that thread, this is probably the best we're going to get, considering the problematic nature of the early digital recording date (1981). From what I was able to find online, this was most likely recorded using an early digital recording deck that used an 18-bit, 48kHz PCM format. It seems that the transfer to DSD for this masterning has neutralized some of the problems with early digital recordings - namely dry strings and harsh brass, AKA digititis. It's still not perfect, but an improvement. And the performance is a great one. If only they'd stuck with analog until digital recording technology was perfected.
Now playing: Joseph Haydn - Les sept dernières paroles de notre rédempteur sur la croix - Quatuor Mosaïques - Recorded live on April 17 (Good Friday), 1992 in the Abbey of Fontevraud
One of my favourite pieces of classical music (in all of its versions - piano, quartet, orchestral and oratorio).
Peter, there are a lot of Rameau fans here. We chime up from time to time. Have you heard the following disc, by the way ? It's excellent. She has a beautiful voice and the whole concept of the album is interesting. I think it works.
Many would argue that "perfect digital audio" still hasn't happened! Yes, it's definitely better these days, particularly recordings made by labels using higher resolution master recorders at 24/96 or 24/192 (which have to be down-sampled for CDs), or better yet, pure DSD, which is very hard to edit (As I recall, improvements have been made in that area, too) and also have to be down-sampled for standard CDs.
On the turntable this morning: Taking a little time this morning to go through more of the early music discs given to me last year. Running out of room, I need to weed out the ones I won't be keeping. I continue to find it hard to discern patterns in my own taste with this early music. This disc, for example, didn't interest me at all. It will be going into the "sell" pile. Others I like very much--others that, on the surface, appear to be much the same thing, similarly described from the same period. Hmmm..... (See below) Russell Oberlin, Charles Bressler, Gordon Myers – Music Of The Middle Ages: Volume 6 Anonymes – EA-0031 Meanwhile, this, for example, I'm rather enjoying. The Ambrosian Singers, Denis Stevens – Two Medieval Masses: Missa Salve - Missa De Sancta Maria Dover Publications — HCR-5263
Now playing: Jacques Ibert - Ouverture de fête; Quattre chansons de Don Quichotte; Louisville Concerto; Tropismes pour des amours imaginaires; Bacchanale - Various artists - released 2011 CD 2 of this highly entertaining set:
Yes, she has coopmv And the video clip is super. Must get round to buying her "Mirages" disc with the Delibes stuff on it
Now playing: Albéniz, Turina, Montsalvatge, Surinach - Concertos from Spain - Alicia de Larrocha, LPO, RPO, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos - recorded 1984, 1977
I agree heartily about the beauty of Ms. D's voice......and Marianne Crebassa is pretty terrific too! Both of these ladies have appeared with the Berlin Phil and their concerts are available for enjoyment on the orchestra's "Digital Concert Hall."
Big-time confusion here. I have this CD listed as released by Avie on my computer and that is how Discogs listed it. But when I checked on Amazon, I got the following search results. It is now listed as a Linn recording ... Same recordings by the same ensembles that are listed under two different record companies, each with its own catalog number. Google search did not find Avie having been taken over by Linn. What is going on?
@Wugged, Below is the same aria sung by the retiring Natalie Dessay in Lakme. Ms. D is supposed to be her successor ... FLOWER DUET (LAKME)~ NATALIE DESSAY DELPHINE HAIDAN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWGZjhQYT-w I have the following CD set by Natalie Dessay
