Her performance of the Ginastera is terrific. It’s an incredibly demanding work, and she is more than up to the challenge.

I listened to this great set via Hoopla. Mostly her 60s recordings for Hispavox, much great Spanish piano music & playing. The last CD is from an 1972 Angel LP with de Larrocha accompanying singer Victoria de los Angeles, also very good.

On the turntable tonight: Franz Schubert - Piano Quintet, Op. 114 "Trout"
Nicely played by Alfred Brendel (piano) and members of the Cleveland Quartet

Philips LP / 1978 / Made in Holland

Brendel has always been known for his exceptional interpretation of Schubert, and his performance here with the Cleveland group is one of warmth and sensitivity. Brendel was 46 at the time of this recording (August 1977 in London); he will be 92 next January.

Daedalus I haven't heard it all.....

Recorded November 8-10, 1949 in Turin. Early Saturday morning listening waiting for the birds to wake up. The birds are smarter than I am-they are wisely still sleeping. Headphone listening with this CD. The sound is good although a little distant. [IMG]

Now playing the following CD from my JS Bach collection by Micaela Comberti and Colin Tilney ...

This was a recording made in 2000, just three years before Comberti's untimely death from cancer. She left the English Concert after Trevor Pinnock had stepped down and joined the Musicum Collegium 90 led by Simon Standage, a fellow alum from the English Concert.

Colin Tilney was a student of Gustav Leonhart and made a number of recordings with AAM and possibly the English Concert ...

    Recorded 1998

This is a great sounding 9th. Beautiful string sound and powerful brass but with no hard edges. Just great resolution.

My 'Essential Borodin-Double Decca' arrived earlier this week. Just CD 1 so far; & enjoying spotting bits of the much later movie version of "Kismet" in it.

    Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne?

@Jamsterdammer, I think this is probably the only recording by this orchestra in my collection. Are you familiar with this Cologne orchestra?

Nope. First time I hear about this orchestra. Seems to have been around since 1827!

A lot of good comments on this forum about these performances ( especially from Alexlotl if I remember correctly ) so I waited for a good bargain and bagged the full Monty ( a gift to me from Santa :D ).......

    How about Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur?

I saw the following CD on Presto a few months ago and ordered it. Interesting history behind this oldest orchestra in Switzerland.

Tilney made an interesting recording of the WTC. The first Book is on clavichord; the second on harpsichord. Also, he did not use equal temperament. He used well-tempered" temperament - as I understand it, a sort of a bridge between old tunings and equal temperament. Finally he played them using the circle of fifths: book one rising and book two falling. This would seem to be consistent with the use of something other than equal temperament.
