On the turntable: Still going through early music, deciding what to keep and what to part with. I expect to have about 100 early music discs to sell when I'm done. Schola De Montserrat, Pater Gregori Estrada – Gregorianischer Choral = Gregorian Chant = Chant Grégorien (Benediktiner-Kloster = Benedictine Monastery = Monastère Des Bénédictins Montserrat) Archiv Produktion – 2533 158
I also have the following SACD by the ensemble. I bought both in the early 2000's simply because they are both SACD sold at very attractive prices. Ordinarily, I would not have bought them since the ensemble was a total unknown to me ...
On LP, I've enjoyed (and recommend) the series of Brahms piano works that Julius Katchen recorded for the London (UK Decca) label. You can likely find them used for a decent price. This is Volume 1, which would seem to have what you are looking for: Also, if you want to continue with Gould, he later recorded more Brahms. This LP was released in 1983. Originals are not expensive; the more recent "remastered" releases go for... well, a lot more money.
Thanks HiResGeek and Wes H for the tips on Brahms late piano music. As for kundryishot, I like GG’s take on Bach, Beethoven et al., … well, ok, maybe not Mozart.
I essentially ignored all the Gould non-Bach recordings (onetime listen only) in my Glenn Gould Original Jacket box (first release bought in 2007 but did not bother with the re-release).
On the turntable, "Corelli / Torelli - Christmas Concertos" performed by The Academy Of Ancient Music led by Christopher Hogwood on L'Oiseau-Lyre.
Good idea @coopmv Listening to "Handel - Messiah" performed by the Taverner Choir & Players led by Andrew Parrott on Virgin Veritas. Featuring: Emma Kirkby Emily van Evera Margaret Cable James Bowman Joseph Cornwell David Thomas (web pics of earlier release on EMI)
"Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik..." Karl Bohm, Vienna Philharmonic & others, rec. 1976?, Polydor, Made In Canada, n.d. Found at the Goodwill today.
Vox Turnabout TV 34171S, issued 1969. Guitarist Walker (1910-98) was Viennese, but I couldn't find any more information about this recording. Mastered by Pete Helffrich.
I was late in the game when I realized I did not have the Mozart Eine kleine Nachtmusik by Karl Bohm but was not able to find even a used one. So I ended up getting the following twofer ...
Sounds like you are still dealing with that 'massive' collection you received from that late professor of music. IIRC, he had a large collection of early music ...
Nonesuch H-71165, issued 1968. Flute by James Galway. I can hear how J.C. was important for Mozart. Another mastered by Pete Helffrich.
For some reasons, Nonesuch has never bothered to release their LP's on CD's. Below is among the very few Nonesuch CD's in my collection ... BTW, wasn't Nonesuch a division within WarnerMusic and I believe it still is ...
Shostakovich -- Ballet Suites Nos. 1-5 (complete)/ Festive Overture/ Katerina Izmailova: Suite ((Jarvi/ Scottish)
I've wondered about this too, but suspect the problem is licensing. Nonesuch recorded very little of their own material, instead licensing performances from Europe (Erato, and many others). Licensing of this type is usually short term, a matter of just a few years, and doesn't convey any 'ownership'. So, 40+ years on, Nonesuch (WEA) has no rights to reissue any of these 'licensed' performances. Too bad, really. I'd kill for a Nonesuch boxed set in original jackets! [edit] and I have Kipnis' Handel disc too - love it!
From the 70s on Nonesuch started to originate recordings. Some of those have been issued on CD, but there doesn't seem to have been any comprehensive or extensive reissue program. Maybe now that Warner is more in the Classical business since they got the EMI Classical catalog they will eventually include the Nonesuch recordings they have owned for a long time.
