Jim Reeves, "The Blizzard" He does a good job with this story as he gets closer and closer to Mary Ann...
Listen to Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant's guitar on this song--love it. Not to mention the wonderful performances of Kay Starr and Tennessee Ernie Ford on this country/pop crossover hit "I'll Never Be Free" from 1950.
"Blue Prairie" Sons of the Pioneers The Western side of C&W. The Sons of the Pioneers often re-recorded their songs over the years, including this one, done earlier in the 1930s with Roy Rogers. This late '50s rendition brought more atmosphere and a different arrangement and slowed it down a bit. Not better, not worse, just different. A classic.
Georgette Jones (daughter of George and Tammy), has a new album out. Doesn't seem to be a CD release at this stage.... My initial thoughts are, she sounds like anybody in modern country music. However, after listening to a few songs, there are a few strong tracks here. I think she has chosen some quality material and teamed up with some people that also added a lot of 'sheen' to what otherwise would be bland recordings... These include Dale Watson, Vince Gill and Dean Miller (son of Roger). This upto duet has Vince growlin' like I've never heard before, wish he did more like this:
Took an early morning Fall walk in the chilly great North East with my wife this morning. At one point a leaf cascade fell over us and I sang out ..At my door the leaves are falling, a cold wild wind has come. That song haunted me the whole rest of the walk and I had to play this when I got home.
Speaking of country legend families...Lefty's younger brother Allen Frizzell can eerily sound like Lefty sometimes--much moreso than David, in my opinion, who also sang this song.
I'm a big fan of Hank Snow's Spanish Fire Ball album from 1967. The latin guitar throughout the album is hypnotizing. Here's his version of "Nuevo Laredo"
This song has been playing in my mind for days. A beautiful newer country song. Ashley Monroe - Like A Rose
Saw the Quebe Sisters last night and they put on a hell of a show. These girls are so damn good at everything they do that I'm kind of surprised they aren't more popular, but I guess traditional music still isn't embraced by the mainstream very much. Still, if they come to your town, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them - one of the best shows I've seen, and for 25 bucks no less.
Although I was never a fan of Collin Raye and often turned his songs when they came on the radio, 'Every Second' was an enjoyable hit single in the more traditional country vein which he recorded during the 1990s.
I heard this song on the radio and had forgotten how much I like it. The Oak Ridge Boys and their wonderful harmonies -
Anybody own this one? wondering what you think of the sound quality. My CD (just purchased new) absolutely stinks! Sounds like a collection of low bit rate MP3s.... Anyone else notice this?
Haven't heard it, but aren't many of the included songs rare obscurities? It's very possible they used needledrops when necessary.
Understood, but would a needle drop sound file necessarily introduce low bitrate MP3 artifacts? I’ve got lots of old blues compilations from ancient artists that don’t sound like this.
With the recent passing of Clive James, British/Australian broadcaster, this is a good one. If you have a sense of humor and a bit of wit, you might get a laugh out of this. This episode has music greats in it like Harlan Howard, Tammy Wynette, Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins. It's a bit of a parody of someone trying to make it big in Nashville with Clive trying his hand at writing a song, and getting these professionals to weigh in on what they thought..... Unfortunately the audio sync goes bad after a while, but if you can get past that, you might find this funny.
