I'm finally playing some jazz records I bought & put aside some time ago. I like the second side, with the basic quartet (Liebman, Richie Beirach on piano, Frank Tusa on bass & Jeff Williams on drums) better that the first with John Abercrombie, three percussionists & a female voice. Recorded 10/10-11/73, Generation Sound Studios, NYC. Producer: Manfred Eicher. Engineer: Tony May.

There is an aspect that I can hear and also see in the concerts about drummers. The instrument had remarkable changes as time going by. Max Roach's or Blakey's or Haynes' drums is not the same one played by Steve Gadd or Dave Weckl. The sound has changed and has become heavier than the past. To me, today a drummer like those of the past could be Jeff Ballard.
With Carlos Ward (as), Sam Brown (g, el g), Paul Metzke (el g) & Charlie Haden (b). Recorded 5/74, Generation Sound, NYC. Producer: Manfred Eicher. Engineer: Tony May. Like a number of my jazz LPs, this once belonged to radio WMUB, Miami University of Ohio. They took good care of their albums.
How nice! Had this LP just in my hand when doing a separate list of my Konitz Items (and there are many).
Beeing not too fond of the vocals on this one but "Zoot & Al" made it for me and the piasnist (Mose A.). - recorded February 1961
NP Miroslav Vitous - First Meeting (ECM) U.S./WB lp W/Kenny Kirkland, John Surman and Jon Christensen from 1979.
A different sound but nevertheless it swings "Jackie Gleason presents VELVET BRASS" - recorded 1957 featuring Toots Mondello (as) - original Cat# CAPITOL W 859 This reissue SM-859
It's thriving at the moment, with some great new young musicians creating great sounds over the last few years.
Up early, thanks to our dog, Nellie, and out on the deck, watching the grey morning sky bring a light drizzle. We've had five inches plus of rain over the last 24 hours. Hoping the neighbors dont mind some free jazz this morning. Listening to "Blue Notes for Mongezi"" from the 5CD box "The OGUN Collection." Reminds me of Art Ensemble material. Chants, whistles, screeching sax, driving bass and drums. Challenging and rewarding listen. Whats not to like? Well, besides the rain.......
Ella Fitzgerald - Sings The Cole Porter Songbook (Verve 314 537 257-2) I rarely listen to jazz with vocals but I`m enjoying Ella`s voice with my breakfast early this morning.
I managed to score a copy of this last month and I really love it. I was completely ignorant of his work before picking it up. The well of jazz artists seems infinite at times
