Denny Zeitlin Trio- Shining Hour ( Live At The Trident) CL 2463 Mono Charlie Haden, Jerry Granelli Liner Notes by the great Herb Wong
I bought several bebop collections back in 2010 because I had never really explored the music. I was always listening to 50s, 60s, and current jazz material.
Currently playing the only trio album by Lyle Mays, with Marc Johnson and Jack DeJohnette. Really nice mostly straightahead/post-bop album.
To state the obvious, Weather Report. Also Herbie’s Mwandishi through Thrust are a must. After that, preview heavily and proceed at your own risk with Herbie. For Those Who Chant (The White album) by Luis Gasca. Good call on the Love Love album by Julian Priester. Then there are the two sides of Bennie Maupin “The Jewel In The Lotus”, which is a stone cold classic of out there music from the period and “Slow Traffic To The Right” for something from the Funk side of town.
Those liner notes are fantastic. I enjoy being reminded that the world really doesn’t change much, despite what we’d like to believe. “If the Kenny Dorham story were ever made into a movie (and the way things are going in Hollywood at the moment don’t let anything surprise you)...” That just cracked me up, along with the statement that this great album is “a high protein diet of musical satisfaction.”
Dizzy's Diamonds. I remember getting this soon after it was released in a used record shop in Haight Asbury, some time in the early 1990's. Such a terrific overview of Dizzy's years with Verve, and a very nice booklet.
Bill Evans Trio - Everybody Digs Bill Evans (Original Jazz Classics OJCCD-068-2) I always listen to this album pushing the "repeat" button when Peace Piece is on. Great piano !
Duke Ellington - The Blanton-Webster Band (RCA 5659-2 RB) Will spend most of my morning with this great band.
Last shout -- 24 hours to go and it needs another 100 backers or so to get it over the line. For $40 you get a double-vinyl pressing, with more options for those who want more. It's now or never folks - follow link above to learn more and hear some of the music.
I've recently subscribed to Qobuz and I'm enjoying lots of new albums. Streaming right now Peter Brötzmann, Takeo Moriyama, Masahiko Satoh - Yatagarasu Peter Brötzmann - alto & tenor saxes, tarogato, B-flat clarinet Takeo Moriyama - drums Masahiko Satoh - piano

I should have bought a copy back then when my eyes could still read the booklet! But I'm glad I found a mint copy of this set and a gatefold CD of Sonny Side Up this year. Now if I could stumble on a copy of that Charlie Christian box...
