Dizzy Gillespie & James Moody on the BBC in 1966 Also Kenny Barron, Christopher White, and Rudy Collins
I've just put that Matt Mitchell on my wants list. Patricia Brennan probably isn't as well known as other vibes players perhaps but she's been appearing on some really good stuff. There's a trio album with Tomas Fujiwara and Tomeka Reid on Rogue Art that is well worth hearing - especially now they've ironed out the technical issues that a lot of the first run had.
Tomas is from Cambridge MA and a former student of the great Alan Dawson, as was Tony Williams and many others. I've seen him in several different settings, sometimes with his mom in the audience who's a friend of a Cambridgeport friend. Never better than when he was playing duet with Joe Morris at Lilypad.
Regarding 'best of 2019', I had my finger on the pulse for a solid 10 years from around 2007-2017... for me that will always be a golden period, but I'm just not keeping up with new releases like I used to, and it's not a 'CD versus streaming' issue, it's a waning enthusiasm issue. I've just had my fill, my appetite is gone. For the time being at least: I'll probably be one of those guys that posts here years from now going "hey I've been out of the loop for a while and I'm getting back in to new releases, what are some recommendations from the last 10 years?" From this year, off the top of my head (and I know I'll be forgetting some) I've liked new releases from Tomeka Reid, Steve Lehman, Matthew Shipp, Roscoe Mitchell and Chick Corea.
Is that the 7 poets trio album? I just searched and that seems to be the one with those 3 on it. It sounds fabulous! Thanks for the recommendation. The site mentioned the technical issues but I didn’t see mention of that problem being solved though....
Well, it's that time of year when we start to work-in some Christmas/Holiday tunes with the 'normal' listening selections. What better way to start things off with some Double Holy House? Recorded September 23rd, 190 at The Bechstein Concert Hall in Berlin. A stunning solo performance of 5 sparkling stars that any Wise (Person) should follow.
They're playing here on Sunday. Tried to make some work schedule changes but couldn't make it happen so we're going to have to pass on this swing. Have you checked out any of Greg Foat's projects?
It’s so good and I’ve never heard it on vinyl. I was hoping it may be a Tone Poet in 2020 and then was awarded The Prisoner as well. There’s a lot of Herbie and so much is good. Empyrean Isles and Maiden Voyage and, on the other end of the spectrum, Headhunters, are special to me. But these two round out that starting five for me.
There are slow years in music and of course it’s according to the individual. But I sought out music more this year than the past couple, after having a kid a few years back, and despite my efforts I haven’t connected with much new stuff. Luckily, there is an endless amount of tunes that I never knew yet is new to me, so I feel extremely content. And overwhelmed.
The Steve Lehman album with Craig Taborn (the latter of whom I'm a fan of) and the Matt Mitchell and the Art Ensemble records are all on my "I'd like to hear 'em but I'm not ready to buy 'em just to hear 'em" list this year. I'm downloading Dave Douglas' Engage album now -- I'm a Greenleaf subscriber but I haven't heard it yet. I was a fan Devotion, his trio record with Andrew Cyrille and Uri Caine, from earlier this year. And Anna Webber's Clockwise. Another one I really liked, but haven't spent enough time with was the Tyshawn Sorey/Marilyn Crispell duo album The Adornment of Time.
After this year's stellar Blue Note reissues, I'm really looking forward to new Tone Poet releases in 2020 . . . Vote for your favourite Tone Poet release this year here: Blue Note's Tone Poet Series: Poll 1958/1980/2019 Blue Note – B0030487-01 Blue Note Tone Poet Series – KPG&JH@CA
Yes it is that one. The issue they had with skipping must have been sorted out since I was sent a replacement a couple of weeks back. Took a couple of months to come through after I (and quite a number of others apparently) notified them of the problem but I think you're fairly safe with it now.

Full moon out there this freezing morning and it must have gotten the dog up early. She was pawing at the side of the bed around 6AM so we are down on the couch listening to ?Monks Casino" disc one. German free jazz pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach lead other European free jazzers through Monks entire catalog on the three CD release Nothing like some Thursday morning Thelonious
It's 5:45 AM, 26 degrees outside & I can't sleep, so I'm listening to this Bill Holman album from 1960. It's from a 4-CD Mosaic set that the public library provides via Hoopla. The band includes Conte Candoli & Lee Katzman (tp), Frank Rosolino (tb), Charlie Kennedy & Joe Maini (as), Holman, Richie Kamuca & Bill Perkins (ts), Jimmy Rowles (p), Joe Mondragon (b) & Mel Lewis (d). Recorded at the Capitol Tower, Hollywood, June 29-July 1, 1960.
