John Coltrane: A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters (Disc 1) For me, A Love Supreme is Trane’s finest album as a leader. I also like the Atlantic recordings like Coltrane’s Sound, Giant Steps, but also Crescent, Coltrane and Ballads from the Impulse! recordings. He lost me when he crossed over into free jazz.
Lovely album, indeed. I really like Ellington’s work from the 60s and 70s, but I do enjoy the late 50s recordings as well.
NP Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Bright Moments (Atlantic) red/green stereo label, double lp I haven’t played any RRK in quite some time. That is just wrong. This live set is always a fun listen, especially his raps. He must have been something to hang out with.
With this album and Super Nova, he capped off a 5 year hot streak on Blue Note... Wayne Shorter--Schizophrenia Shorter (ts); Curtis Fuller (tb); James Spaulding (as, fl); Herbie Hancock (p); Ron Carter (b); Joe Chambers (d) "Tom Thumb":
So me and the missus have been digging this for the past week or several. It compiles heavy jazz>funk>spirito>cosmo sessions from Black Fire and Strata East labels. Plenty of rhodesian heavy afrodesia. Think Black Jazz Records, AC impulse! years, Fela, The Awakening, Nina, Mwandishi...........do give it some ear.
Heading a quintet in a live setting, he has me enjoying this set so far... Dave Douglas Quintet--Brazen Heart: Live At Jazz Standard (Saturday) [part of the 8 CD set] Douglas (t); Jon Irabagon (ts); Matt Mitchell (p); Linda Oh (b); Rudy Royston (d) "Miracle Gro":
I could be way off but my understanding is that Bert Jansch had to deal with some issues which caused his heavy drinking, while not unique or a bad person because of it but probably wasn't ideal to work with at the time. I think Go has my favorite flute solo of all time on it. Such a great track.
WP: Ornette Coleman - This Is Our Music. Great music and iconic cover. Charlie Haden is all do we look like we are f-ing around? I think not!
Sonny Rollins - A Night At The Village Vanguard (Blue Note UCCU-40026) From November 1957, with David Bailey/Wilber Ware on bass and Elvin Jones/Pete La Roca on drums. Platinum SHM-CD.
Another cool, quiet morning on the deck. The garage doors got a second coat of pain and the tomatoes in the garden got a little trimming so I can walk thru the rows and see whats there. It was getting like a jungle with the foot high plants growing over each other, and I prefer to find red tomatoes before they fall onto the ground!! Today I will visit my mom so have to figure out a reasonably healthy lunch meal to pickup on the way down. And take her some tomaotoes, which she loves. Right now, enjoying some easier listening with some standards on the menu from Junior Mance. Actually cued up 'Miss Otis Regrets' for a repeat listen, it was that good. Hope everyone is hanging in there!! I think one of Douglas' best bands. Great rhythm section -- anything with Linda May Han Oh or Rudy Royston is worth hearing in my book. And great reed man. I must say I haven't been through the whole live collection, but I love the two studio sets and this set, which I've heard too.
Charles Mingus - Tijuana Moods (RCA 88697979592) Enjoying Ysabel`s Table Dance… From The Complete Columbia And RCA Albums Collection.
What a great set, beautifully presented including a 50 page informative booklet and two CD's of live music appearances in France in 1969 - 1970. Grant plays hiss ass off in this live setting. "Funk In France" indeed. Nice Friday start out here. A bargain at about ten bucks per disc.
Friday night, reading up on how to completely disassemble my old Mac Pro. A bit of Hubbard to keep me company: Freddie Hubbard - "Open Sesame" | 2008 reissue | Classic Records | 200grm | Mono Man, Freddie most have blown some minds when he arrived on the scene. Such clear ideas and execution. What a debut! Now, back to the tech nerdery - wish me luck.
I bought this album (Masterpieces by Ellington) on a whim in 2004-2005 or so and it completely opened my ears to Duke -- masterful arrangements, not an inch of space wasted. I'm going to listen to this today!
