NP Carla Bley Andy Sheppard Steve Swallow - Andando el Tiempo (ECM) German pressing I’ve never got around to exploring much of Carla’s music but I love this one. It is melancholy and tender so easy on the ears early in the morning.
My copy of the new Julius Hemphill box arrived yesterday. Looking forward to digging in this afternoon. Meanwhile listening to Lee Konitz's great, high concept late '60s duets album.
Now playing, Nick Brignola's "On A Different Level", one of my favorite bari sax recordings. I was lucky enough to get Nick to sign my copy.
Ron Carter with Renee Rosnes, Jimmy Greene, Payton Crossley Foursight The Complete Stockholm Tapes just popped up on Qobuz new releases about halfway through it's excellent and very good sounding.
NP Bags & Trane (Atlantic) blue/green stereo pressing. Continuing my mellow morning. Last cuppa tea before heading to the farmer’s market.
Headhunters Live Herbie Hancock: Keyboards, sorcery Bill Summers: Percussion, weird noises Paul Jackson: Bass, good vibes Mike Clark: Drums, pulse Bernie Maupin: Reeds, fashion consultant
Nick Brignola played for free in bars in Albany NY every week at the time of this recording. I saw him that very same week of this session. Did you meet him in Albany?

I saw him in Ted Curon's band at Saratoga Performing Arts Center 4th of July weekend 1976. Love the Beehive album he did with Pepper Adams.
NP: Japan import CD of "The Sonny Clark Trio". What a cool swinging date from 1958. Features seven standard tunes of the era including "Can't We Be Friends", two versions of "Blues In The Night", "Dancing In The Dark", and others. Great music on a sunny, cold day out here. Oh yeah, it's a binaural recording. Would prefer mono, but still sounds very good. Clark is in top form. Recommended.
I ordered this and a few other records from In and Out Records back in December but shipment to the US is taking awhile.
There's so much Sonny Clark music that was released only in Japan. I love me some Clark and am waiting with bated breath (and I guess bated credit card) for when Blue Note releases My Conception as part of the Tone Poet series later this year.
Ornette Coleman - To Whom Who Keeps A Record (Atlantic 8122-79600-2) I ve decided to spend the rest of my day with Ornette`s Atlantic recordings, starting with this one.
I am new to vinyl and particularily to Jazz. Some newer releases have really blown me away, including this 2020 release from Bluenote Bill Frisell - Valentine
Did Saratoga have a jazz festival in 1976? I know that George Wein had at least part of the "Newport" Festival in NYC in 1976, but maybe he started producing events at Saratoga as well that year. I was disappointed that the Newport festival was renamed The Kool Jazz Festival, after Kool cigarettes. As long as many cities are renaming landmarks after corporate sponsors, I figure that cities themselves may as well rename themselves after corporate sponsors. You might live in Coca Cola, Nebraska or in My Pillow, Idaho.
OK, got the morning walk in with our dog along with the neighbors dog. It had warmed up to -7C so took them out on the hill to burn some calories. Now I just finished more Verve pricing along with a spin of Johnny Smith. so its off for 40 minutes on the rower, since the garage should be heated up by now. Trying to get 15 hours of (indoor) rowing in for the month of January. Have to grab some music out of these boxes and it is can be anything as long as its more than 40 minutes. I decided on Art Taylor (it says 61 minutes...)
