NP Thelonious Monk - Les Lliasons dangereuses 1960 2lp set I haven’t taken this out for a spin in a while. What great sound and the music is wonderful.
I was born on the same day as Billy Bob Thornton. I prefer to celebrate sharing a birthday with Louis Armstrong and Barack Obama.
NP: Matt Mitchell - Phalanx Ambassadors Matt Mitchell – piano, composition Kim Cass – bass Kate Gentile – drums Patricia Brennan – vibes, marimba Miles Okazaki – guitar Phew! this is really something else. Very dense, hard hitting music, very intricately written but also quite free. I'll be needing a few more listens of this CD to fully appreciate it. but I love it so far. On Pi Recordings.
This was also the first time that alternate takes of Charlie Parker had ever been issued (1949). Savoy did not really issue alternate takes until after Parker had died. Dial issued alternate takes a number of times before Parker's death. I expect that Parker did not appreciate this. Although alternate takes had been issued in the past by other artists, most often this was due to a mistake, or due to the fact that the master had been worn out. It was essentially Parker's music that started the serious obsession of jazz enthusiasts for owning alternate takes, everything including false starts.
I was born on the same birthday as Ricky Nelson's older brother, David, who was once in a movie. I blame this on my parents.
Finally cracked open my one step of Sunday at the Village Vanguard. It really is a great version of this exceptional recording.
Thanks for the tip. These guys really have it together. I got the Live album and then added a couple to make a nice hi-res disc:
Darn. Maybe something cool was recorded when you were born. Hank Jones, Wendall Marshall and Kenny Clarke recorded at the Van Gelder residence for Savoy, and on the other side of the country a Chico Hamilton concert was recorded for Pacific jazz the day I was born.
I was born on the day A Love Supreme was recorded, the first quartet session that produced the album. Not to the year, of course.
That is a phenomenal image, but the design spoils it with the silver banners. What is the link to information on the reissue of Billie's Decca material?
Crazy Blues, though not the first Mamie Smith record, is considered a landmark recording in music history
Sorry, I should have been more clear about the Hoffman CD- it’s the Decca one he did on MCA years ago.
OK. I have Steve's John Coltrane MCA comp. It's still pretty good. The first time the included 1961 Village Vanguard material was released.
