Absolutely. His run of ECM albums is pretty much flawless. That first period with Bobo Stenson and friends was very rewarding, his Billy HIggins period was just brilliant (Brad Mehldau and Larry Grenadier!) and that Rabo de Nube group with Moran and Harland is one of my favorites on the label. I don't listen to his post-ECM output as much, as I never bought them on CD, but there's definitely some good stuff in there. 8: Kindred Spirits was very good. NP: Jan Garbarek Group - Dresden Jan Garbarek – soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, willow flute Rainer Brüninghaus – piano, keyboards Yuri Daniel – electric bass Manu Katché – drums This album sounds freaking huge on the right system. Don't know much about Yuri Daniel, other than he's not Eberhard Weber, but he has some great solos. Katché has never been better, and Garbarek's sound gives me goosebumps. Love this album.
Agreed. One of my favourites and I think a quieter masterpiece is Which Way Is East A duet with his longtime friend Billy Higgens just months before Higgens passed. The two play a huge assortment of instruments between them in a 2 cd sprawling affair , quirky at times, angular and then contemplative, percussive , african , anything can go here. Wondrous and timeless
Prestige All-Stars - Tenor Conclave (Prestige/Analogue Productions CPRJ-7074 SA) Another one of Trane's session playing for Prestige, this one from September 1956 with Hank Mobley, AL Cohn and Zoot Sims on tenor as well.
Just received this from forum member. Wayne Shorter The Soothsayer BN LT988 OG Wayne Shorter Freddie Hubbard James Spaulding McCoy Tyner Ron Carter Tony Williams Hard to comprehend why this was recorded in 1965 and released in 1980 for the first time. I would put this up there with Juju , All Seeing Eye, Etc. Or Adam’s Apple.
Pictures of Duke with Ben are actually quite uncommon. I wonder if it is a tune that Duke had just written and was showing the sheet music to Ben and Jimmy Hamilton
Im surprised you didnt know this T. Its basically Crocodile Rock word for word. Elton stole the tune from him.
Ellington's version was titled "Crock o' Bile Sock". They never recorded it, but often played it at the end of a long night. Elton just took out the BS and inserted DR Take note: "El-ton" = "El-ling-ton" if you take away the "ling". That is "ling" for linguistic elegance, which Ellington had, but not poor Elton.
NP Charles Kynard - Reelin’ With The Feelin’ (Prestige) OJC vinyl With Joe Pass on guitar! Did he ever play another soul/jazz session?
WP: Pharoah Sanders - With A Heartbeat [Douglas Music AD-01] FLAC From 2003 with Pharoah Sanders: tenor sax, flutes; Trilok Gurtu: tabla, voice; Graham Haynes: cornet, electronics; Nicky Skopelitis: guitars, electric sitar; Jeff Bova: keyboard; Dr. Jean-Louis Zink: heartbeats; Bill Laswell: bass, flute, keyboard. This is a bit of a high-concept album. The idea is that the good Dr. has recorded a human heartbeat and that recording is present throughout to varying degrees. But it ends up working musically pretty well.
If anyone is in the central Michigan area this coming Saturday, 8/7/21, he's (Jim Alfredson) playing with guitarist Will Bernard at a local, free jazz festival in Old Town, Lansing, at 7 pm. Wycliffe Gordon is the headliner. I'm not planning on going (though I'd like to) due to the Delta variation, even though I'm vaxxed, due to "an abundance of caution." https://www.micharts.org/schedule
Reminds me of recently hearing him sing (for the first time) on a British comp which has a recording from c. the early '60s on it.
Pharoah Sanders Live at the East (Impulse!, UCCI-9368), 2021 SHM-CD. Live at the East and Black Unity have really grown on me.
I know this may not be thought of as one of the masterworks by Duke but I find it thoroughly enjoyable... Duke Ellington And His Orchestra – Ellington Indigos Label: Impex Records – IMP8311 Format: CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Gold CD Country: US Released: 2014
If you like organ and the Beatles, Jim’s group, Organissimo, has done a great record, A Soulful Tribute to the Fab 4.
