Tribute, I wasn't slamming the WPA, if that's what you thought, but the lyricist of the cited song by Pops and the Mills Brothers sure was, and that's what I was referring to. 'Work while you play; don't worry about the boss he'll get a pink slip next week anyway...3 little letters that make life OK, WPA' I was amazed by that lyric when I first heard it back in the '80s on one of those MCA Jazz Heritage LPs that were under discussion earlier.
A WPA, to employ people directly, would never be allowed today, whether for music or for hearth and home. But, sometimes the WPA was used to tear down the homes and communities of the less fortunate. Here is a song about that. Everybody's working in this town, and it's worrying me night and day If that mean working too, have to work for the W.P.A Well well the landlord come this morning, and he knocked on my door He asked me, if I was going to pay my rent no more He said you have to move, if you can't pay And then he turned, and he walked slowly away So I have to try, find me some other place to stay That housewrecking crew's coming, from the W.P.A Well well went to the relief station, and I didn't have a cent If that's the only way you stand, you don't have to pay no rent So when I got back home, they was tacking a notice on the door This house is condemned, and you can't live there no more So a notion struck me, I better be on my way They're going to tear my house down, ooh that crew from the W.P.A Well well I went out next morning, I put a lock on my door I thought I would move, but I have no place to go The real estate people, they all done got so They don't rent, to no relief clients no more So I know, have to walk the streets night and day Because that wrecking crew's coming, ooh from that W.P.A Well well a notion struck me, I'll try to stay a day or two But I soon found out, that that wouldn't do Early next morning, while I was laying in my bed I heard a mighty rumbling, and the bricks come tumbling down on my head So I had to start ducking and dodging, and be on my way They was tearing my house down on me, ooh that crew from that W.P.A
I was gonna say; hating the WPA is an interesting grudge, but people have all sorts of strange ones so you never know...

I've been away from this thread for a while so it's possible someone posted this already but I wanted to give a quick heads-up to anyone who purchases digital downloads that Qobuz is running a Black Friday 60% off sale through November 29 and among the discounted titles are a number of French jazz releases on the Laborie Jazz, Label Bleu, and ONJ Records labels. The ONJ releases tend to be a bit more "out." A cool find for me was Anne Paceo's 2016 album, Circles, which was previously unknown to me, but I checked it out on YouTube and then bought it (US$3.60) along with 25 others because...no impulse control.
I'd say it's place in the pantheon is established and secure. In my experience Ask the Ages is widely considered one of, if not the, best jazz albums of the 1990s.
This was my father's. He was kicked out of every high school he attended for his unapologetically open marijuana use, usually in the student smoking lounge (can't believe those used to be a thing). He had good taste!
Listening to Agartha, Pete Cosey reminds me of Sonny Sharrock but with a bit more Hendrix, a bit more blues. I know he used to be a session guy at Chess.
Did you happen to see if he has more copies? I'm in Sacramento with family for the holiday, but headed back to Bozeman next week...
I'm pretty sure that was the only copy. They keep a pretty small stock, so they rarely have duplicate copies of anything outside the most popular titles.
With a lineup like this, how could you go wrong? Switched the preamp tubes in my amp around tonight, put the GE in the line level and now have both Matsushitas in the phono stage. Sounding a bit more balanced. I had the GE in V1 because I'd read it has more impact on the sound, but I think I like it better this way. Some day I will get two more GEs so the preamp section will be all GE.
