This set, CD2: At Newport and Duets. I have a small handful of these sets and really like them; I know they're PD deals and source material is always suspect, but overall I'm thankful that there are labels keeping this stuff in the marketplace and not charging an arm and a leg for it. I wish the annotations were better but at $14 it's hard to complain. Music is wonderful in any case.
Good Monday morning to all... Chico Freeman – Still Sensitive Label: India Navigation – IN 1071 CD Format: CD, Album Country: US Released: 1995 Genre: Jazz Style: Post Bop
Agreed. Some of his great recordings from the VERVE catalog as I see 6 Items from the covers (vinyls also in my collection).
A very short album in length 6 songs almost a EP but a great selection of tunes. In particular the improvised take on the the Miles Davis tune "All Blue"
A Howard Lucraft West Coast Jazz Sampler with some rare tracks Decca DL 8679 [FSR reissue 1986] - Showcase For Modern Jazz - rec. around 1957
Dizzy Reece - Mosaic Select (Mosaic MS-011) First real snow storm of the winter over Montréal with 12 inches+ in the forecast. Perfect time to stay at home and enjoy some jazz. I'll spend most of the morning with Dizzy Reece and friends from this great box.
Started the snowy morning off with some hot tea and some Coltrane. Still feeling crappy from the Covid. And thanks again for the condolences and messages related to my mom's passing yesterday. 'Ballads' was just about the right mood for the morning. Now off to blow some snow.
I'd be happy to find out I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of any complete (and available) versions of Diz and Stuff Smith's Verve sessions since the Mosaic box. IIRC, that sold out fairly quickly. Haven't been to Discogs lately I'll admit in advance...
NP: Tom Harrell - Moon Alley (Criss Cross 1986 LP) First listen, and enjoying this quintet. The dark side of the moon alley LP cover required some clean-up (see before and after pic below). Not sure what the brown stain was. These LP restoration projects are so satisfying. Shining brighter now, and the warm Van Gelder sound could be a classic 60s set. Alto Saxophone, Flute – Kenny Garrett Bass – Ray Drummond Drums – Ralph Peterson Piano – Kenny Barron Trumpet, Flugelhorn – Tom Harrel
Z O N I N G | Mary Lou Williams (Smithsonian/Folkways) CD Bass – Bob Cranshaw / Milton Suggs Congas – Tony Waters Drums – Mickey Roker Piano – Mary Lou Williams / Zita Carno Recorded 1974. CD has 13 tracks, two were previously unreleased. 20 page booklet included. A superb disc, highly recommended! Most tracks were previously released in 1974 on Mary Records LP / M103: Mary Lou Williams - Zoning.
I often find when filing that I've pulled out as many to play as I've put away. Here's one; NP side B of Marcello Melis - Angedras With Don Pullen and Don Moye, Sandro Satta on alto.
WP: Art Tatum - The Genius of Art Tatum vol. 8 (Verve trumpeter label) First listen. Love the David Stone Martin cover art, so sharing a pic of my copy. Having heard the Pablo group and solo series, this felt potentially redundant. My conclusion is you can't have too much Tatum. Sound may not be as strong, but performances are. NP: Erroll Garner - Garnering (Mercury) This pic didn't come out as well with the reflection (need to work on that), but I like Garner Mercury photos. Another outstanding pianist, here with bass and drums, though the piano is very much the focus. Bass – John Simmons (tracks: A2 to B4), Leonard Gaskin (tracks: A1) Drums – Charlie Smith (2) (tracks: A1), Harold "Doc" West (tracks: A2 to B4) Piano – Erroll Garner
Just a couple of days ago, I was thinking about how Garner, Woody Herman, Argo era Ahmad Jamal and Benny Goodman (there are others) long provided opportunities to collect lots of items for very little expense; I've acquired many by all of those 4 for well under $1, some even free; in playable shape of course; I've passed on many more that weren't.
NP Herbie Hancock - The Piano (Sony) Orig released as a D2D lp, this is the cd version with alt. tracks.
The Stuff Smith Mosaic didn't sell out, it was withdrawn soon after it was released; something to do with the licensing.
