Interesting that you should say that about Tyner, I bought the Tone Poet this week, and some parts of the album just stopped me right in my tracks because I thought what McCoy was playing was simply stunning. Higgins is swinging like crazy on this date, so good.
I saw Mitchell and Robinson with Mayall. And yes, this Mainstream date is alright. (I have it on a Solid Records Japan cd).
Spinning a homemade comp of Sergio Mendes on cdr while playing cribbage. It’s a blend of Brasil ‘66 and his jazzier stuff prior to that band. It’s a sunny almost warm day today so I spent a little time on the deck in the backyard after some gardening. Spring is almost here, I can feel it. His cover of Work Song is very different than other versions.
Maciej Kądziela –The Taste of the World This sax led Polish quartet starts off very free and gradually gains coherence as the album progresses. I wasn't really on board at first, but settled in as things progressed. In the end, adequately interesting to warrant a subsequent listen.
From this box set Followed by Chick Corea "Expressions" GRP cd Man, this guy is so chipper, and shows off a bit. But a satisfying listen.
No, not really. I used to rent a garage apartment from a group of Scientologists that were packed into a four bedroom and basement (rare for Austin that basement) house and recognize this sort of confident exuberance when they were really "into" the "ORG" and believing they were becoming superhuman saviors of the planet. That's there in a lot of Corea's work. His "state of mind" was steadier and longer-lasting than theirs. . . they were just surviving because they put in so much work at the ORG for like ten cents an hour and scrambled and scammed their way through a few years doing other things. . . I was glad to get out of there when I did but that garage apartment was really cheap and great for band practice. This solo piano disc is quite nice. . . but it's so "intellectual" and I prefer more lyrical, emotive playing overall.
I have 5 David Murray albums now but this is my favorite one by far. Don Pullen is on fire on the organ
Man, that Motian trio with Lovano and Frisell was one of my favorite bands ever. So glad they were captured at the Vanguard so beautifully (with Frisell playing in stereo). That was like their natural habitat. Listening to the album I can see them in my mind's eye having caught them there a bunch. What joyful sound. Really playing great on this set of mostly oft played Motian compositions his book. What a career Motian had. I might play this again tomorrow just for kicks .
Turns out it was a good thing I didn't go down there tonight, wound up with a couple of hours of household things that had to get done.
I finally did it. I played drums at the jazz jam I attend every Wednesday. My friend, a drummer and instructor has been pushing me to play and I finally did it. I told him after the first of the year that it was my New Years resolution to play with the “ guys”. Yes I was nervous but they called songs I knew (Afro Blue, Song For My Father and Nardis) so I did my job, listened to the other musicians and left the stage pretty much unscathed. Glad to get over the nerves of the first time. I’m ready for the next opportunity.
I am happy for you. A very nice repertoire. Sometimes I like seeing YouTube clips of unknown musicians who play jazz standards. In particular in the USA many high schools students make musical performances then uploaded on YouTube. Also in Italy there are academies with jazz courses and occasionally make some clips even with special guests like American musicians during their tours in Italy.
Playing Steve Kuhn lately … Trance (1974) this is a good’n With Steve Swallow Jack DeJohnette And Sue Evans with added percussion
(ECM 1986) Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy Love me some tuba (courtesy Bob Stewart). I just love this record.
