I can't stand the bombastic Derek and the Dominoes version. Hendrix's guitar sounds like Curtis Mayfield's, and can't be beat

A very cool version. I think it would be more notable if Beck had kept in an instrumental arrangement, but he has added a vocal accompaniment in recent years, even releasing a live version with Jimmy Hall on 2015's Live+.

I love EC and D&D, but never warmed to the D&D version, or EC's subsequent live versions during the 1970's.

There is a version by Eric Clapton & band recorded Dec. 4 1974 that really is fabulous....don’t know if it is the best but its sure one of them.....I have it on a Live in the 70s CD box comp. its a must-hear, imo.

There will only ever be one version, as previously stated, the live version from the Albert Hall is just superb. Never liked D&theD version, it seemed to as if Clapton had reduced it to a simplistic three chord trick, that had none of the blues and soul of the original.

I was at MSG when Clapton & Winwood did it. It gave me the chills, man.

This video doesn't have the greatest sound quality, but this is a really cool version of both "Castles Made of Sand" and "Little Wing" by Tuck & Patti:

So was I. Better show than Cream there.
Back to original question, Derek’s Version is my fave. So heartfelt

For the longest time I didn't even know this song had lyrics because I'd only heard the instrumental version by Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was the reason I learned guitar.

Yeesh. I never expected this response or all the great versions to check out. Thanks y'all for that.

To answer my own question, my favorites are the original (which isn't a cover), the Derek and the Dominoes version (for the transformative angst), and the SRV version, for maybe his best guitar playing ever.
